WWE World Heavyweight Champion Seth “Freakin” Rollins vs. Finn Balor
This match is seven years in the making: at SummerSlam 2016, Finn Balor defeated Seth Rollins to become the inaugural WWE Universal champion.
But during the course of that match, Balor legitimately injured his shoulder, resulting in him having to relinquish the title and take some time off to recover from surgery. This was Finn Balor’s only reign as a WWE world champion.
The story on the surface here is that Finn Balor blames Seth Rollins for his WWE career being derailed due to that injury. The real story is the state of the Judgement Day and the Money in the Bank briefcase held by Damian Priest.
What will happen when the inaugural WWE Universal champion faces the first-ever WWE World Heavyweight champion?
Seth Rollins vs. Finn Balor Pick:
Seth Rollins has been a fighting champion ever since he became the first-ever WWE World title holder last May. While one line of thought is that Rollins should hold onto the belt longer to build up its prestige, we align with a different school of thought.
While playing hot potato with a championship belt only hurts the title’s and the wrestling promotion’s reputation, Rollins losing the championship after several successful and impressive title defenses will not put a stain on Seth or the newfound title.
But what putting the belt on Finn Balor will do is add more intrigue to The Judgement Day, namely that Balor’s co-member Damian Priest is the Money in the Bank holder.
The WWE has already teased the question on if Damian Priest would cash-in on Balor if he would become champion, and we think they are going to see that scenario through.
When Paul “Triple H” Levesque ran creative at NXT, fans loved the way he appreciated certain talent, including how he pushed Finn Balor.
While Vince McMahon used Balor as a glorified enhancement talent to help upper-card stars shine, it appears Triple H is poising “The Prince” for another title reign and push.
And putting the Belt on Balor with Priest as the MITB creates a narrative arc for The Judgement Day that practically writes itself.
Furthermore, with this SummerSlam looking to be the biggest one in every way yet, it would make sense for at least one major title to change hands on Saturday, and we don’t see Roman Reigns or Asuka losing their belts.
WWE Women’s Champion Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Bianca Belair
Like Finn Balor, Asuka is another in-ring talent that Triple H gave a huge push and title reign to in NXT. And Mr. Levesque is on a similar course with “The Empress of Tomorrow” for her current WWE run.
This match seems designed to build Asuka up again as a seemingly unbeatable monster in the ring because, after all, no one is ready for Asuka.
Asuka vs. Charlotte Flair vs. Bianca Belair Pick:
We predict that Asuka will continue her reign as a dominant champion by claiming a victory over two of WWE’s biggest wrestlers in this triple threat match, and the finish will likely set up a program between Belair and Flair.
We also don’t think Iyo Sky is going to cash-in her MITB contract. It is rumored that Sky and Asuka will soon be in a program together, so Iyo Sky will likely tease a cash-in at SummerSlam to help kick that feud off.
Intercontinental Champion Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre
Like any Gunther match, this bout will undoubtedly be a slobber knocker that could steal the whole damn show.
“The Ring General” Gunther is just over a month away from breaking Honkey Tonk Man’s record for longest-reigning WWE Intercontinental champion at 454 days.
It’s clear that the WWE is on a trend of making today’s wrestlers more relevant and just as impressive as superstars from yesteryear.
First it was The New Day in 2016 setting a new record for the longest WWE Tag Team Championship reign at 483 days, breaking Demolition’s 28-year-old record of 478 days.
Then, it was Roman Reigns beating Hulk Hogan’s record. Now, it seems Gunther—who is the longest-reigning NXT UK champion at 870 days—is set to bring the title-reign for the Intercontinental Championship to the modern day.
Gunther vs. Drew McIntyre Pick:
While some naysayers claim that it makes no sense to bring back Drew McIntyre for his big return to have him lose his first match out, let alone a championship one, we align with the odds on this one.
We feel Gunther going over would not only allow him to break the Intercontinental Championship record, but it it would also continue to build him as seemingly unbeatable.
Rumors are also starting to stir that Ilja Dragunov will soon move from NXT to the main WWE roster. Just like in NXT (we see you Triple H), a program between “The Mat Dragon” and “The Ring General” but this time over the Intercontinental title would be huge.
In addition, Drew McIntyre has possibly foreshadowed an upcoming heel turn in a recent promo, and losing at SummerSlam could be the catapult to a great run as a monster heel.
Logan Paul vs. Ricochet
Throw out ring psychology, in-ring storytelling, and formulaic heat-shine spots because this match is going to be hot-spot city from bell to bell!
Logan Paul vs. Ricochet is going to be an athletic showcase, and it should be a ton of fun to watch.
