This season, The Football Pink is going to take you back to season 1978-79 in the old English First Division; just as if you were really there (which people of a certain vintage will have been). Coincidentally, the weekend match dates of the 2017/18 season correspond exactly with those of 78/79.

We’re going to bring you a week-by-week run down of all the latest happenings from the season in question with match reports, highlights and some of the more unusual stories kicking around from the time. And don’t forget to look out for our Saturday evening results round-up, bringing you news from around the grounds – just like the old Football Pink newspapers of yesteryear.

It all kicks-off this weekend with a Charity Shield special featuring league champions Nottingham Forest and FA Cup winners Ipswich Town. We’ll get the thoughts of Forest boss Brian Clough going into the new campaign and whether his unfashionable side can retain their League championship whilst making a full assault on the European Cup.

We’ll also take a more detailed look at how preparations are going for the new term as we chat to Manchester United winger Steve Coppell, Wolverhampton Wanderers striker John Richards and West Bromwich Albion stalwart John Wile.

You can get involved too. If any of you have any special memories from that particular season that you’d like to share with us, or any mementos of the time, take a photograph of them and send them to either: thefootballpink@hotmail.co.uk or mitchthesteve@gmail.com and we’ll look to publish them throughout the season.
