Time has run out for the England gaffer, as history is set to repeat itself at Euro 2020. After a disappointing defeat to underdogs Iceland at Euro 2016 in the round of 16, Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions are set for an early exit at next month’s tournament.
A supercomputer study conducted by bookmaker Casumo revealed that England would be defeated in the round of 16 – in six separate simulations! On each of those six occasions, Southgate was shortly relieved of his duties.
You can understand fans’ frustrations with an exit at the first knockout stage in back-to-back tournaments – which proved the final nail in the coffin for Southgate’s tenure as boss. It’s worth noting that England haven’t won a major tournament since the 1966 World Cup.
Despite being the second-favourites to win the tournament at odds of 11/2, it’s fair to say that football isn’t coming home, after all. Elsewhere, the same study reported that leading favourites France will be crowned champions – and are good value at a price of 5/1.
