Ryan Garcia’s Career at a Glance: Becoming KingRy
Few fighters have been groomed for success quite the same way that Ryan Garcia has. A phenom before he turned pro, Garcia was a 15-time national amateur champion on his way to building a staggering 215-15 record.
It’s no surprise, then, that he was rushed into a pro career at the tender age of 17. He won that first fight against Edgar Meza and was rewarded with a deal from Oscar de la Hoya’s Golden Boy Promotions as a result – a truly impressive beginning of an even more impressive career.
His first fight for de la Hoya came on the undercard of Bernard Hopkins’s final fight against Joe Smith, Jr, in December 2016. Garcia was amazing that night, winning by KO in the second round, but his performance was overshadowed by the less-than-illustrious end to the Executioner’s career.
It was straight to the top for Garcia from there, as he finished seven of his next eight fights before knocking out Miguel Carrizoza in his 11th bout to win the vacant WBC-NABF junior super featherweight title.
Garcia would later add the WBO-NABO super featherweight and silver lightweight belts with wins over Jayson Velez and Romero Duro, respectively. He also added the WBC lightweight crown with a 7th-round TKO of Olympic gold medalist Luke Campbell in Dallas.
It could be argued that his triumph over Campbell is the highlight of his career so far, but it was also the first time that cracks began to show in his veneer of invincibility, as he was knocked down for the first time in his career in the second round.

Ryan Garcia’s Last Three Fights: Challenges, Outcomes & More
After knocking out Campbell, Garcia ran into a bit of scheduling misfortune, as his next two fights (against Javier Fortuna and Joseph Diaz) were canceled due to injury. Garcia wouldn’t enter the ring again until February 2022, when he took on former IBO lightweight champ Emmanuel Tagoe in San Antonio.
While Garcia was unable to finish Tagoe, that doesn’t mean the fight was close. He spent most of the fight toying with the former champ, knocking him down in the second on the way to a lopsided unanimous decision victory.
After that, he was finally able to consummate a matchup with Javier Fortuna at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles in July 2022. It was another walk in the park for Garcia, and he finished Fortuna in the 6th via TKO.
At this point, it would have been fair to say that Garcia had never been truly challenged in his career, save a few moments in the fight against Campbell. However, it wasn’t clear whether that was because he was so good or because his competition was so subpar.
No one would be able to accuse his next opponent, Gervonta “Tank” Davis, of being a tomato can, though. The undefeated southpaw had torn through his 29 opponents, knocking out 27 of them on his way to an unblemished record.
The fight was one of the most hotly anticipated boxing matches in recent memory, and for his part, Davis showed no fear of the ultra-hyped Garcia. He went so far as to criticize his boxing technique, insisting that Garcia only had a left hook in his arsenal and that he “wasn’t a complete fighter.”
As the trash talk from both fighters reached a crescendo, they finally met in the ring…and Davis promptly showed the world that Garcia only had a left hook and wasn’t a complete fighter.
Tank dominated the fight, knocking Garcia down in the second before polishing him off in the seventh round with a devastating liver shot.
Worse yet for Garcia, while the loss took the shine off his heretofore-unblemished pro career, it also earned him a reputation as a quitter, as he was able to stand up a mere second after the ref finished his ten-count. Why, the thinking goes, could Garcia get up at 11 but not at 9?
Who is Ryan Garcia Fighting Next? The Latest Predictions
The Garcia-Davis fight had been so massively hyped for so long that it’s hard to picture where Garcia goes now.
He definitely needs to rehabilitate his image, which might suggest a fight against an opponent he could easily handle, but beating up on journeymen won’t erase the memory most fans have of him resting on his knee at the end of the Tank Davis bout.
Still, until he officially announces his next opponent, all we can do is speculate — and we feel these fighters are the ones that make the most sense for Garcia’s next opponent.
Ryan Garcia vs. Gervonta Davis: How Likely Is the Rematch?
This is likely the fight that Garcia wants most of all – unless, of course, he’s truly the quitter his detractors insist he is. Revenge over Tank would instantly repair Garcia’s image, as well as set up a huge rubber match from which both fighters would profit massively.
However, the first fight was so lopsided that it’s hard to see why Davis would take a rematch, much less why Garcia deserves it. A second bout would be a tough sell as well, as there’s no reason for fight fans to spend $85 to watch what would likely be a replay of the first fight.
That’s not to say that Garcia-Davis II will never happen; we certainly expect it will (and if it doesn’t, that likely means the wheels have truly fallen off Garcia’s career).
Now’s not the time, however. Garcia needs to build his hype back up before he tries to take down Tank again.
Of course, it should also be noted that Davis will be under house arrest for the next few months due to his hit-and-run conviction in June, so he’s not fighting anyone anytime soon.

Garcia to Fight Devin Haney
The undisputed lightweight champ, Haney was the logical next opponent for whoever won the Garcia-Davis fight, as he’s also one of the best pound-for-pound fighters in the world.
Of course, Garcia didn’t win that fight, so there’s little reason to suspect he’ll be rewarded with another superfight immediately afterward, especially since the gate for this one would undoubtedly be dampened by Garcia’s poor performance against Davis.
Also, given Garcia’s lackluster showing in his last bout, there’s little reason to suspect this one would end much differently for the former champ. The only good news for him might be the fact that the defensive-minded Haney is much less likely to finish him off early than Davis.
Haney, fresh off a close (and controversial) victory over Vasiliy Lomachenko, is much more likely to pursue a bout against Davis (whenever the Maryland legal system allows him to fight again) or the next fighter on this list.
Ryan Garcia vs. Shakur Stevenson
A silver medalist in the Rio Games, “Sugar” Stevenson has gone on to become one of the most hyped fighters in all of boxing. In fact, many expect Stevenson — not Davis, Haney, or Garcia — to eventually be the class of the 135-pound division.
The featherweight champ is known for pawing at his opponent with his long jab before launching devastating shots at the body — and we’ve all seen how Garcia deals with devastating body shots.
While this fight would likely generate a fair amount of excitement, it just doesn’t make much sense for either fighter. Stevenson is gunning for a superfight of his own — indeed, he was jawing with Haney after his victory over Lomachenko — while Garcia needs to rack up a few impressive Ws.
A Stevenson-Garcia fight isn’t out of the question by any means, but we’d be pretty surprised if it happened at this point in both fighters’ careers.

Will Garcia Fight Rolando Romero?
A bout against Romero, the newly-minted WBA Super Lightweight Champion, seems to be the contest KingRy wants most. He’s one of the few fighters that Garcia himself has suggested for his next bout, along with the two pugilists directly below him here.
For his part, Rolly Romero has said this fight “is going to happen,” and Romero clearly wants Garcia for his first title defense.
This possibility at least offers something of value to both fighters. Garcia would get a winnable fight and the chance to immediately earn a belt, while Romero could snag some name recognition and a big payday on his way to other potential fights against the likes of Errol Spence if he moves up to 147 pounds.
There’s just one problem: the WBA has ordered Romero to defend his title against Ohara Davies first. While this might not be the kind of problem that money can’t solve — and Romero may be willing to ditch his title if he plans to move up in weight soon anyway — it’s at least a potential speed bump for this matchup.
A Garcia-Romero fight would make a lot of sense, and it’s also one that seems to have the closest expiration date. If it doesn’t happen in the next year, these two fighters could go their separate ways, never to meet at all.

Ryan Garcia vs. Isaac Cruz
“Pitbull” Cruz and KingRy have had the sort of “will they or won’t they” relationship for years that would make sitcom love interests blush. Ordered by the WBC to fight in 2022, that bout never materialized — but here they are, jawing at each other well into the second half of 2023.
While Cruz doesn’t have the name recognition, undefeated record, or closet full of title belts that other fighters on this list can offer, there is one thing Pitbull can boast that Garcia can’t: a close loss to Gervonta Davis.
Indeed, Cruz gave Tank all he could handle and more when they met in December of 2021. He wound up on the wrong end of a unanimous decision, but he was able to handle all the punishment that Davis could dish out — something that Garcia famously can’t say for himself.
Taking on Garcia would give Cruz a shot at his first marquee victory while beating Pitbull would allow KingRy to credibly argue that his performance against Davis was a fluke.
More than that, though, these guys really seem to despise each other — and fights have been built on much shakier foundations than that.

Ryan Garcia’s Bout Against Teofimo Lopez Jr.
Fresh off an impressive victory over Josh Taylor that earned him the WBO and The Ring light welterweight titles, Lopez is another fighter who offers quite a few advantages to a resurgent Garcia.
KingRy could earn a couple of new crowns — and the cred that comes with toppling a flawed fighter coming off an impressive victory — with a win over Lopez.
While Lopez is a power puncher, his style wouldn’t seem to pose too many issues for Garcia, who could likely dodge the bigger punches before unloading that patented left hook of his.
Then again, if Garcia were to lose this fight (likely due to absorbing a left hook of his own), Lopez has a strong enough reputation that it wouldn’t necessarily spell the end of KingRy’s career.
The potential sticking point here? The fact that Lopez publicly mulled retirement after beating Taylor. He’s also embroiled in an ugly divorce and custody battle, so his mind not be focused on his next bout.
It’s hard to believe that a 25-year-old budding superstar would hang up his gloves, though — and the payday from a Ryan Garcia fight would allow him to pay for quite a few high-priced lawyers.

George Kambosos & Ryan Garcia: Will This Fight Happen?
If Garcia can’t line up a fight with Lopez, perhaps it would make sense to take on the only man to have beaten him in the ring.
Kambosos took a split decision off Lopez in November 2021, but since then, he’s been on the wrong side of a couple of decisions to Devin Haney (both of which came in his native Australia).
Neither fight was close, and it doesn’t look like Kambosos will be a factor moving forward in the star-studded lightweight division. Still, his name carries some clout, and he’s a dangerous fighter when underestimated.
Kambosos has also publicly criticized Garcia following the Tank Davis fight, insisting that KingRy could have beaten the count had he truly wanted to.
For his part, Garcia has previously claimed to be “licking his chops” at the prospect of facing Kambosos, going so far as to say that the Aussie’s victory over Lopez was the result of “a lucky night.”
This fight wouldn’t have as much juice as a matchup against Lopez or Romero, but it might be a smart fight for Garcia all the same (and, given the fact that it might be Kambosos’s last shot at a big payday, it’s one he literally can’t afford to turn down).
Ryan Garcia vs. Jose Ramirez
Moving down the food chain, we come to “the Jaguar,” Jose Ramirez. Ramirez lost to Josh Taylor, who lost to Teofimo Lopez, who lost to George Kambosos. Got it?
Despite the lone blemish on his professional record, Ramirez is an excellent fighter who ranks among the top five lightweights in the world. His resume boasts impressive wins over former champs like Maurice Hooker, Viktor Postol, and Jose Pedraza.
Even the loss to Taylor was closer than it had any right to be, given the fact that Ramirez was knocked down twice in the fight. He fought back and almost pulled out the victory, ultimately falling by a score of 114-112 on all three scorecards.
Ramirez has clamored for a fight against a boxer of Garcia’s stature before, and he clearly has more to gain from a potential match than does Garcia. However, he’s in the unenviable position of having nothing to offer big names such as KingRy; a loss to him would be devastating, while a win would do little to boost their stature.

A fight against Barboza would be a lot of risk with seemingly little reward for Garcia, but if he feels he can dominate a greener fighter, it might be an attractive possibility all the same.
The fight would be a no-brainer for Barboza, who’s been on the outside looking in within the division for quite some time. If he can’t secure a bout with Garcia, his options are limited to gatekeepers like Liam Paro, Sandor Martin, and Jack Catterall.

Garcia reportedly made $15 million for the Tank Davis fight — but you can never have enough money, right?
A clash with Pacquiao would be nothing more than a naked cash grab, but naked cash grabs have never failed to be attractive to prizefighters. A fight between these two has been rumored for years but has never come to fruition.
