Overview of the 2023 NFL Season: Storylines to Follow in Week 9
The NFL wouldn’t be the high-level product that it is without drama, and each week there is plenty that fans should keep an eye out for.
Here are some of the top NFL betting storylines for Week 9 of the season.
Two games on the agenda stand out from the Week 9 slate as the Miami Dolphins play the Kansas City Chiefs in Frankfurt, Germany.
Both teams are as good as their passing game will take them.
The other key matchup will be Sunday Night Football’s Bills vs Bengals showdown. Cincinnati started out the year rocky but has quickly returned to form as a contender in the AFC, but they won’t have it easy against a 6-2 Bills team that’s playing as good as anybody right now.
The Cowboys & Eagles Square Off
Rivalries run as hot as the recent successes of both teams, and there aren’t many organizations that have performed as well as of late than Dallas and Philadelphia.
These NFC East teams have plenty of animosity toward one another, and scoring a victory here in Week 9 could be huge for their chances of claiming the divisional crown at season’s end.
Adding Dominos To The Season Long Playoff Chase
While the Jets and Chargers won’t have their playoff fate decided by Monday night, both teams are likely going to be in the hunt as the season comes to a close, and winning games like this one against equal competitors is huge for their chances.
Don’t be surprised if at the end of the year, this game had major implications on the AFC playoff picture.
Explaining NFL ATS Bets: What They Are, and the Pros & Cons of Betting Them
What Are Spreads?
In sports betting, the spread is a tool used by bookmakers to create a level playing field between two unevenly matched teams.
It’s essentially a handicap that’s applied to the final score to determine the winner for betting purposes.
In short, a spread evens out the odds, making the bet more appealing regardless of the teams’ actual abilities.
Reading a Spread
When it comes to reading a spread, the most important aspect to consider is that the point differential dictates how much of a lead is needed in the game.
With a negative number spread (ex. -4.5) the team must win by more than that number in order to also cover the spread.
For a positive number, the underdog will have that spread (ex. +2.5) and they must win or lose by less than that number in order to cover.
In the result of a game being a toss-up they will be labeled PK, or something similar where all you need to do is pick the winner.

Advantages of Placing ATS Bets
Betting against the spread is great because it allows you to place wagers that will get you your money back. Oftentimes, the team that wins covers the spread as well.
So it can be a great way to take advantage of your knowledge of contests.
Disadvantages of Betting Spreads
The disadvantages of betting spreads is that scores are very volatile in the NFL. One play or a random injury could completely flip the result of a game.
When betting on favorites, it can also be frustrating to correctly predict the winner but they maybe don’t win by enough to cover.

NFL Week 9 Against the Spread Predictions: Game-by-Game Analysis at Expert NFL ATS Picks
With some great games on the agenda comes great spreads, here is some analysis of each Week 9 contest before you place your wagers.
Titans at Steelers (-3)
Analysis: The Titans rely on their RB duo of Derrick Henry and rookie Tyjae Spears to carry the offense. With QB Ryan Tannehill battling injuries, the offensive production could be in doubt. However, the Titans defensive unit has looked strong to keep them competitive.
Pittsburgh enters this game with a knack for squeezing out tight contests behind their incredible defensive strength.
The offense has struggled with a large part of the blame being attributed to Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada.
Can they once again pull out another victory here on Thursday Night?
Writer’s Expert Pick: Steelers -3
Without Tannehill, the Titans offense has looked very flat. Even if the veteran QB can return, it likely won’t be at 100%.
Expect Head Coach Mike Tomlin to get his team to pull out a tight contest because of it.
Dolphins at Chiefs (-2.5)
Analysis: There isn’t an offense putting up more production wise than the Miami Dolphins. The passing attack led by QB Tua Tagovailoa is dangerous but the rushing attack is what sets this team so far ahead in the league.
The Chiefs won’t be easy, but expect Miami to come out motivated against the reigning champions.
QB Patrick Mahomes continues to play well, but not to the level we’ve come to expect. The Kansas City offense doesn’t have the receiving consistency to open up the offense, but the defense has looked strong to this point.
The team will be a contender so long as they have Mahomes and Kelce, but they haven’t shined as bright as usual.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Dolphins ML
The Chiefs are a team that should never be doubted as proven with last year’s Super Bowl run, but until they show more offensive consistency, the Dolphins look like the better team and should win this game as a result.
Vikings (-2.5) at Falcons
Analysis: The injury to WR Justin Jefferson was a tough one, but the Vikings continue to get their way back into turning this season around on the shoulders of QB Kirk Cousins.
The defense has had its struggles, but Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores is starting to get the team in order.
For Atlanta, the big question mark is QB Desmond Ridder as the passing game is the missing piece for this offense to take the next step. The defense still has its issues as well, as a lack of pass rush can hurt the team’s overall ability to limit opposing teams.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Vikings -2.5
The Vikings look to be bouncing back from their early season slump, they should continue to build and win this game in Atlanta by three or more.
Related: How to Bet on College Football
Cardinals at Browns (-4.5)
Analysis: The return of QB Kyler Murray is extremely exciting for the Arizona Cardinals as they enter the back half of the season. While the team has performed admirably up to this point, adding a passer of his caliber should be huge for the team’s production.
Cleveland has dealt with some ups and downs, but they have the talent and balance to go head to head with anyone.
So, the 4.5-point spread here seems like a bit of overcorrection to seeing a star back and healthy. The offense needs to fully get in rhythm with QB Deshaun Watson back from his injury, but the team is still very strong and should be able to come out firing against the Cardinals.
Writer’s ATS Pick: Browns -4.5
Despite Murray being back, the Browns have one of the strongest rosters in the league.
That should be enough for the team to pull ahead and cover at home against this Arizona ballclub.
Rams (-3.5) at Packers
Analysis: Head Coach Sean McVay deserves a world of credit for how strong this Rams team has looked through the first half of the season. Injuries have hindered the team, but overachieving with a lack of talent has been the Rams mantra to this point.
Expect that to continue through Week 9.
The Packers offense has looked more efficient when RB Aaron Jones is around, but still the team needs to take a step up. The offensive line has battled injuries, but against a Rams team that has struggled with similar issues, the excuse doesn’t mean anything.
Writer’s ATS Pick: Rams -3.5
The Rams look to be a legitimate playoff team to this point in the season, expect them to control this one on the road in Green Bay.
Commanders (-1) at Patriots
Analysis: The Patriots season has fallen apart at the seams, but Head Coach Bill Belichick doesn’t seem to be one interested in tanking. The offense had its moments early in the year, but the mix of offensive line injuries and turnovers have caused chaos for the week to week play.
QB Mac Jones could turn things around, but if he wants to remain the QB of the future he will have to do so with urgency.
QB Sam Howell has been a pleasant surprise at QB, but defensively the Commanders have continuously let up far too much production. Head Coach Ron Rivera has to be feeling some warmth from his seat, so winning games like this one against New England are crucial for his job security.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Commanders -1
Washington has shown promise at times and that’s better than the Patriots as of late. Roll with the Commanders to win and cover in Foxboro.
Bears at Saints (-4.5)
Analysis: New Orleans has impressed but there are too many moments where the offense can’t get things going in order to consistently produce. The NFC playoff picture is still very jumbled, so if they can get things in order then there is hope, but the clock is ticking.
A win here against the Bears is crucial.
QB Justin Fields missed some time with a thumb injury but now back, the Bears can continue building on the success they had started to find.
Overall, the roster has plenty of issues, but they could do enough to win a few games to spark optimism around the organization going into the future.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Bears +4.5
The Bears should get back to finding their spark now with QB Justin Fields fully healthy. That should be enough to keep this one close against a Saints team that struggled to find its rhythm.
Seahawks at Ravens (-1)
Analysis: When the Ravens hired Offensive Coordinator Todd Monken, there was plenty of excitement. The offense has looked better, but the scoring hasn’t been as efficient as hoped.
It seems like a matter of time before it fully clicks, but still , until the issue is gone the clouds of doubt will always linger.
For Seattle, the team remains promising, but QB Geno Smith has struggled to show consistency in order for the Seahawks to be at their best. The defense has been phenomenal however, as the secondary is impactful enough to turn any game in their favor.
They’ll look to bring their A-game against a strong Ravens team.
Writer’s ATS Pick: Seahawks ML
This game promises to be one of the best on the Week 9 slate, but in such a great contest, the best play is rolling with the underdogs. Go with Seattle to win despite being on the road.

Buccaneers at Texans (PK)
Analysis: Many wrote off Tampa Bay after QB Tom Brady retired, but the team has gotten healthy and played well as a result. QB Baker Mayfield isn’t perfect, but he’s been effective.
The run game is still questionable though as this team looks to take the next step forward.
As for Houston, rookie QB CJ Stroud has looked phenomenal through the first half of the season and looks like an early favorite for offensive rookie of the year.
He’ll get a very strong test in Week 9 though, as Tampa Bay has one of the strongest defenses in the league.
Writer’s ATS Pick: Buccaneers ML
While the Texans have been very impressive to this point, the Buccaneers have the defense to take Stroud and this offense out of rhythm, putting themselves in position to win on the road.
Colts (-1.5) at Panthers
Analysis: QB Bryce Young has started to show promise but the Panthers continue to drop games with little motivation to do so.
The team has bright spots, but they have yet to come together as a team to put together a strong enough performance to win. Could they do so against an injury-riddled Colts?
QB Gardner Minshew has taken over for the season in Indianapolis and while he’s been alright, the team has looked uninspired. The Colts can win this game behind their ground attack on the shoulders of RB Jonathan Taylor, but it won’t be easy.
Writer’s ATS Pick: Panthers ML
Carolina should notch their first victory of the season at home against Frank Reich’s former team. Sending a wave of optimism through the Panther fan base.
Giants at Raiders (-2.5)
Analysis: The Giants have had a rough season to this point after making the playoffs last season, Injuries to QB Daniel Jones and RB Saquon Barkley have stunted the team’s chance to get in rhythm.
However, with both stars now healthy, can they score a victory on the road?
Things haven’t been pretty for the Raiders but they’ve managed to get by and win some tight contests. While QB Jimmy Garoppolo has battled injuries, the team still has a chance to get into the wild card picture if the offense can sync-up for the back half of the season.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Giants ML
In a battle of two very inconsistent teams, expect New York to escape with victory thanks to the higher level of coaching on their sideline.
Cowboys at Eagles (-1)
Analysis: Head Coach Mike McCarthy took over the offense for games like this one against Philadelphia where QB Dak Prescott will be expected to step up.
The team has had its highs and lows to this point, but their game against Philadelphia could have major implications on the optimism surrounding the team into the back half of the season.
While the Eagles haven’t looked dominant, they’ve continued to win games.
Both the defense and offensive line have battled injuries, but the Jalen Hurts-AJ Brown connection combined with the success of D’Andre Swift has helped the team look well on their way to another strong playoff run.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Eagles -1
The Eagles have the Cowboys numbers when both teams are healthy, and while there are injuries on both sides, Philadelphia should continue to succeed and pull out the victory here.
Bills (-1) at Bengals
Analysis: QB Josh Allen has had few too many turnovers as of late that has dropped his MVP odds, but the Bills still remain one of the NFL’s best teams.
They arrive on Sunday Night as the favorites, but both units will need to bring their A-game to take home the victory.
The Bengals had a plethora of red flags to start the season, but all-in-all seem to have gotten back on track and should be one of the top contenders in the AFC.
The QB Joe Burrow and WR Ja’Marr Chase connection is as dominant as ever, and with the Bills battered secondary, that should be their plan of attack in Week 9.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Bengals ML
The Bengals and Bills are two very talented teams but the Bengals are trending up while the Bills have had their issues. At home, roll with Cincinnati to take the win.
Chargers (-2.5) at Jets
Analysis: For the Chargers, QB Justin Herbert has had some rough outings that have had this team’s struggles become more prevalent.
The defense continues to have its issues as well. Entering this game as a 2.5-point favorite they will need to produce offensively and limit the New York rushing attack.
QB Zach Wilson has found a bit of rhythm as of late and it’s been enough to right the ship of a very talented roster. On top of that, RB Breece Hall has found his stride on the ground helping this team produce.
Defensively, the team will have their hands full against Los Angeles, but they have the talent to potentially pull off the upset.
Writer’s Expert Pick: Jets ML
The Chargers have had issues when it comes to going against strong defenses, and the Jets defense is one of the top units in the league.
Expect them to pull off a big time victory: Monday Night football odds are in their favor.
