Overview of the 2023 NFL Season: Storylines to Follow in Week 8
When looking at the NFL Schedule for Week 8, there is tons of promise for great games with additional headlines on top of that. Here are some of the most notable storylines to keep an eye on as the teams go to battle.
Prodigy vs Protege With Both Needing A Victory
Atlanta Head Coach Arthur Smith got his opportunity as a head coach following his work as offensive coordinator for the Tennessee Titans under Head Coach Mike Vrabel. Now, the two coaches will go head to head in Week 8 with both teams looking to score a big win on the season.
While neither team sits atop their conference standings, they are both in the hunt to compete for their divisional crowns or a wildcard position. Scoring a victory here could be the key difference between being in the playoffs, or watching at home.
Shaping Out The NFC Hierarchy
Week 8 has plenty of great games on the schedule, but the Rams vs Cowboys game is one that should have tons of intrigue. QBs Dak Prescott and Matthew Stafford faceoff in what should be an exciting offensive affair while both defenses have had their high and low moments. Both teams are likely in the wildcard race, so figuring out how they compare could be a strong indication for how the NFC playoff standing could look.
Super Bowl Preview?
While the Bengals started out the season struggling, it appears those issues are a thing of the past. Now, Cincinnati goes up against an undefeated San Francisco 49ers who could very easily be the best team in the NFL.
Can QB Joe Burrow and the Bengals play spoiler to the pursuit of perfection? Can QB Brock Purdy continue to look phenomenal against the stout Cincinnati defense? There are plenty of questions heading into this game, and it will be exciting to get answers.

Explaining NFL ATS Bets: What They Are, and the Pros & Cons of Betting Them
What Are Spreads?
Spreads are point differentials placed by sportsbooks for there to be an expected 50/50 split between bettors. As a result, the odds of both sides of the bet are often the same if not close, and it gives a chance for those making wagers to make bets that will get them near equal returns on the money they bet.
Reading a Spread
There are 3 different ways for the number of a spread to be read. For the favorite, they will have a negative number. For example, if a team has a -3.5 spread, they need to win by 4 or more in order for them to cover.
For underdogs, the number will be positive. So let’s say a team has a spread that is +6.5. The underdog team would need to lose by 6 or less (or win) in order to cover.
The last aspect is PK, which means that the sportsbook is saying both teams have an equal chance to win. So the bettor would just choose whichever team they think wins the game with no point differential needed.
Advantages of Placing ATS Bets
Betting against the spread is a nice betting method because it is consistently offered across multiple betting odds, and is the headline bet. There is constant research and coverage done regarding spreads in the media, and it will often get you nearly the same return as you bet.
Disadvantages of Betting Spreads
Betting spreads have their downside, as it isn’t as lucrative as other types of wagers you may find. At the same time, NFL games are rather unpredictable, so a single play could bust your bet. It can be demoralizing when you bet on a team to win by a certain amount of points, and they win but don’t cover.

NFL Week 8 Against the Spread Predictions: Game-by-Game Analysis
There are countless great games for you to sit back and enjoy this weekend, but on top of that there is also some great value with the spreads. Here is a breakdown of each match up on the Week 8 schedule and what to expect.
Buccaneers at Bills (-6)
Analysis: Tampa Bay rolls into this game as a pleasant surprise through their first six games as their defensive unit is one of the strongest groups in the NFL. On top of that, QB Baker Mayfield has done a nice job playing efficiently to get the football in the hands of the team’s playmakers in order to produce enough offensively. Now against Buffalo, both units will be heavily tested in their pursuit of a Thursday Night upset.
QB Josh Allen has been stellar through the first chunk of the season and the Bills have been business as usual on their way to what seems like another year contending for the AFC crown. In week 8 though, Allen and this offense need to continue to find ways to thrive or they could be surprised and miss out on what would be a nice confidence-boosting victory.
Writer’s Pick: Bills -6 | OVER 46.5
This game should be more intense than many expect thanks to the Buccaneers defense, but Buffalo looks the part as one of the top teams in the NFL. Expect this offense to find ways to produce and eventually get out ahead enough to cover the spread.

Rams at Cowboys (-3)
Analysis: The Rams entered the year with many expecting it to be the beginning of a rebuild, but the offense has been stellar behind QB Matthew Stafford and his star wideouts Cooper Kupp & Puka Nacua. On the other side of things, defensive coordinator Raheem Morris has established himself as a legitimate Head Coaching candidate as the team has held up well against opponents. Dallas won’t be easy, but the Rams have shown enough promise to possibly take this one despite being the three-point underdog.
Head Coach Mike McCarthy has been heavily criticized through the beginning of the season as the Cowboys have had very feast or famine results, and got obliterated by the 49ers just a few weeks ago. QB Dak Prescott will need to step up in order for this offense to produce, but if he can then Dallas could secure a huge win here in Week 8.
Writer’s Pick: Rams +3 | Puka Nacua OVER 5.5 Receptions
The Cowboys have had their share of ups and downs so far through the first seven games of the season, and this Rams team seems to have the pieces to create similar problems for the defense. With an additional three points in their favor, roll with the Rams to cover.

Vikings (-2.5) at Packers
Analysis: QB Kirk Cousins has played well through the start of the year, but the Vikings haven’t been able to figure things out on the ground to make the offense reach it’s best play. Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores’ scheme is seeming to come along though, so this Minnesota ball club is progressing as a result.
The Packers looked promising to begin the season but have started to sputter as of late. In spite of that, there is still some promising moments that the offense flashes that could come together for a strong outing. While the Vikings defense has been better, they have the big play ability to capitalize against the Vikings’ blitz-heavy scheme.
Writer’s Pick: Vikings -2.5 | OVER 23.5 Viking Total Points
Both of these NFC North teams were hoping to be in a better spot by this time of the year, but there is still enough time to make up ground. For Minnesota, they look to be on the right track and should be able to win by three or more against their division rival.
>> Bet on NFL Week 8 at BUSR <<
Saints (-2.5) at Colts
Analysis: The Saints have squeaked out a lot of close contests up to this point in the season, but they’ve still shown enough promise to where they’re in the running to potentially make the playoffs. QB Derek Carr has been a welcome addition, and the offense is surrounded with countless weapons to make plays. There are still some concerns, but New Orleans has what it takes to go on the road and beat the Colts.
Unfortunately for Indianapolis, rookie QB Anthony Richardson has been battling injuries that have caused him to miss time. But with backup QB Gardner Minshew and the dominant run game, they’ve found ways to keep their efficiency. Head Coach Shane Steichen has shown promise for the long term optimism for this team, but for now they just want to win in Week 8,
Writer’s Pick: Saints -2.5 | UNDER 41.5
Both teams in this game have a strong case for how they could walk out victorious in this one, but roll with the more experienced Saints team to score a nice cross-conference victory on the shoulders of Derek Carr.
>> Start betting on the NFL at SportsBetting.ag <<
Patriots at Dolphins (-6.5)
Analysis: The Dolphins play host to the Patriots in Week8 as the teams face off for the second time on the season. QB Tua Tagovailoa has done a phenomenal job leading an offensive unit that can turn any snap into a highlight, but the defense has had some issues so far under new defensive coordinator Vic Fangio.
The Patriots came into the year with expectations to bounce back after last season’s offensive issues but once again find themselves struggling to figure things out. On the defensive side, injuries have plagued the team. Now the team is desperate to figure things out and recover before it’s too late, but that won’t be easy against this Dolphins offense.
Writer’s Pick: Dolphins -6.5 | UNDER 48.5
The Patriots kept this within a score in Week 2, but with the injuries and stalled offensive momentum of late, this one could easily get ugly. The Dolphins likely won’t light up the scoreboard still, but they should be able to win by over a score.
>> Place your NFL bets at BetUS <<
Jets (-4.5) at Giants
Analysis: QB Zach Wilson has shown that he has found a way to improve from his early season struggles, but it’s the stellar play of RB Breece Hall that has helped this Jets team start to get the season back on track. Defensively, they can compete with anyone, so they should be able to continue that here against the Giants.
Head Coach Brian Daboll was able to find success last season but the Giants look like an entirely different team this year, and in the worst way possible. QB Daniel Jones and the defense have struggled to find ways to play efficiently, and now the team is spiraling with very little time to get back on track.
Writer’s Pick: Jets -4.5 | Breece Hall Anytime TD
This battle for New York won’t bring as much intensity as fans had hoped before the season, but the Jets have been trending in the right direction as of late while the Giants continue to struggle. The Jets should win by enough to cover in the battle for New York.

Jaguars (-3) at Steelers
Analysis: Expectations were high for this Jaguars team entering the year, and while they’re winning games, there is still some success left to be desired. The offense has all the talent in the world, but QB Trevor Lawrence hasn’t stepped up to the top level of QBs as hoped. Can he change that going forward in the season?
The Steelers have looked strong defensively, but the offense continues to have too many stalled drives. Offensive coordinator Matt Canada has been receiving a large amount of criticism, but if he can guide the team to a nice day against the Jaguars then those doubters could be silenced.
Writer’s Pick: Jaguars -3 | Trevor Lawrence UNDER 249.5 Passing Yards
The Jaguars should be able to tough this one out as the Steelers have had too many offensive issues to instill confidence they can take this one. However, expect it to be a tight battle. Yet with just a three point spread, the Jaguars should still cover.
>> Get your NFL odds at XBet <<
Eagles (-6.5) at Commanders
Analysis: In Week 4 when these two teams faced off the Eagles were able to walk away victorious in overtime. This time around, Philadelphia looks to control this matchup with their stronger season to this point. QB Jalen Hurts will need to step up in this one, as the Washington secondary has been picked apart all season.
The Commanders have been up and down to this point in the season, but playing host to a division rival and super bowl contender, scoring a win could be huge to get some momentum going. QB Sam Howell has shown flashes, but defensively the Commanders must be better if they hope to have a good year.
Writer’s Pick: Commanders +6.5 | Commanders OVER 23.5 Total Points
Despite the fact that this game hit overtime the last time these teams faced off, the Eagles once again come in as the heavy favorite. While Philadelphia should win, expect Washington to find a way to keep it close. They found some offensive success against this Eagles defense once before, they could certainly do it again.

Texans (-1) at Panthers
Analysis: In a battle of the rookie QB, Carolina’s Bryce Young has looked promising in the past few weeks to reinstill confidence to Panther fans that they’ve found their answer at the position. Still though, the team has struggled up to this point, and has yet to win a game as a result.
On the other side, QB CJ Stroud hit the ground running for the Texans to start the year. As far a wins and losses, the team could be better. However, for first year Head Coach Demeco Ryans, the team has outperformed expectations and seems to be on the right track as they look to build up the franchise.
Writer’s Pick: Texans -1 | CJ Stroud OVER 245.5 Passing Yards
In a battle between the top 2 picks (top 3 even) the Texans have looked to be far and away the better team up to this point. Carolina should start to build up more momentum as the season progresses, and that could result in a strong showing in Week 8, but for now Houston is the safe bet.
Browns at Seahawks (-1)
Analysis: As far as contenders go, the Seahawks have looked like one of the more well-balanced teams in the NFL. QB Geno Smith has been great, with RB Kenneth Walker dominating on the ground. Then defensively, the young but competitive unit has shined up to this point proving the team capable to go against anyone. We’ll see how they fare against a strong Cleveland ball club.
The Browns on paper have a roster that should be able to dominate, but to this point in the season they’ve been inconsistent. The loss of RB Nick Chubb has shown an obvious impact on the offense, but if QB Deshaun Watson can play at a high level then this Browns team is still capable of making the playoffs. Winning here against Seattle would be a great confidence booster for the team.
Writer’s Pick: Seahawks -1 | Geno Smith OVER 1.5 Passing TDs
In a matchup that could potentially qualify as one of the best games of the week, the Seahawks should have the secondary to help stall this Browns offense and push them ahead on the scoreboard. In addition, Geno should be able to toss up a couple scores to help Seattle get ahead.

Chiefs (-7.5) at Broncos
Analysis: Through the first seven games, the Broncos have looked uninspired at best. Recently acquired Head Coach Sean Payton has struggled to make his impact, and the defense has been awful. Now they play host to the Chiefs for the second time of the season. Iff things continue to look bad, there could be some big changes coming to the roster.
QB Patrick Mahomes remains one of the top superstars in the NFL, and the Chiefs look well on their way to continuing their recent success. The lack of a true top receiver has hindered the offense a bit, but the defense has pleasantly stepped up which should improve the team’s chances in the later parts of the year.
Writer’s Pick: Chiefs -7.5 | OVER 49
The Chiefs offense has gotten back in its groove while the defense has also shown some nice promise. Yet for Denver, the team seems to have lost interest. The Chiefs should make light work of them in this contest and come away with the victory.
Ravens (-9.5) at Cardinals
Analysis: Baltimore has been a strong ball club, but offensive coordinator Todd Monken needs to find a way for this offense to convert the improved efficiency into more points. QB Lamar Jackson has looked very good as the superstar of the offense, but until the team steps it up scoring wise, there will remain questions.
For the Arizona Cardinals, the team has already outperformed many fans’ expectations but the team still has their fair share of issues that keep them as one of the worst teams in the league. They’re in the later chunk of what has been a brutal seven-game stretch. However, they can’t excuse themselves as they try to pull off a big upset at home against Baltimore.
Writer’s Pick: Cardinals +9.5 | OVER 45
The Ravens should win this game, but the Cardinals have proved to be a scrappy opponent. For a Baltimore team that has had too many average outings offensively, this 9.5 point spread is likely too large to cover.
>> Start betting on NFL Week 8 at Bovada <<
Bengals at 49ers (-3.5)
Analysis: QB Joe Burrow battled injuries through the beginning part of the season, but now that he has found his rhythm again, the Bengals offense looks to be one of the best in the league again. Defensively, the team has had its issues that will need to be ironed out, especially against San Francisco, but there aren’t many teams capable of beating the 49ers. Could Cincinnati be the one to possibly pull it off?
The 49ers walk into Week 8 undefeated on the season, QB Brock Purdy has proven that he is a star in this offensive scheme, and its led to this San Francisco team being dominant on both sides of the football. Now at home against the Bengals, can they get ahead to 8-0?
Writer’s Pick: Bengals ML | OVER 42.5
The undefeated season is unlikely to last all season, and the Bengals are one of the most capable teams on the schedule to end the pursuit. With Burrow looking to be fully recovered from his early season injuries, Cincinnati has a good chance to pull off the upset.
>> Check out the latest odds at Lucky99 <<
Bears at Chargers (-9.5)
Analysis: The Bears began the year looking like nothing had changed as the team played poorly on both sides of the football. While there are still some major issues, the team has looked to take a giant step and QB Justin Fields has shown flashes of high-level play that could keep him as the team’s face of the franchise moving forward. Against a lackluster Chargers defense, can the Bears continue to produce?
For the Chargers, they had hoped to be sitting with a better record to this point. However, they still remain in contention for a playoff spot if they can play well enough through the rest of the season. QB Justin Herbert has played extremely well under new offensive coordinator Kellen Moore. Yet the defense continues to be a liability for the team’s success. Against an inconsistent Bears team, maybe they could find a way to instill some confidence.
Writer’s Pick: Chargers -9.5 | Justin Fields Anytime TD
The Bears have looked better from the beginning weeks of the season, but the Chargers still look like they are a few levels above them. 9.5 points won’t be easy, but the Chargers should be able to handle business and get a big win at home.
Raiders at Lions (-7.5)
Analysis: Head Coach Dan Campbell has established an excellent culture in Detroit, and the team has been one of the best in the NFL up to this point of the season. The team has been physical on the ground and defensively, but what’s most impressive for the Lions is their ability to handle themselves when expected. A great trait for good ball clubs in the league.
For the Raiders, the team has struggled but still hovers around .500 heading into Week 8. QB Jimmy Garoppolo has had an issue with turnovers in the passing game that will need to be cleaned up, but with his supporting cast, the offense is plenty capable to produce in any game.
Writer’s Pick: Lions -7.5 | David Montgomery Anytime TD
Detroit has established themselves as one of the best teams in the league and handles business pretty well week to week. They have a clear upper hand on the Raiders in this one which should be enough for them to cover and walk away with a nice victory on Monday night.
