Overview of the 2023 NFL Season: Storylines to Follow in Week 6
In each week of the NFL season, there are storylines that add extra intrigue for the weekend ahead. Here are some of the top narratives to keep an eye on in Week 6.
Can Cincinnati Officially Get Back On Track?
There aren’t many more teams in the NFL who have disappointed more than the Cincinnati Bengals. However, they are now 2-3 on the season and could potentially get back to .500 with a showdown against the very dangerous Seattle Seahawks.
If the Bengals can win that one, they’re right back in the mix in the AFC conference and playoff picture. QB Joe Burrow’s health is the big question mark surrounding the team, but if he can get to .500 while hampered then Cincinnati should be on their way back.
Establishing The NFC Hierarchy
An underrated game for Week 6 of the NFL will be between the NFC North-leading Detroit Lions vs the NFC South-leading Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Both teams have started out strong through the first five weeks, but to establish themselves among the top of the NFC, they’ll look to score a big victory here in Week 6.
Kellen Moore’s Revenge?
Kellen Moore is one of the NFL’s more respected offensive coordinators, but he was let go from the Dallas Cowboys last season leading to some intrigue for the potential faceoff between Moore and his former employer for Monday Night Football.
Both the Chargers and Cowboys could use a big win here in Week 6, it should be an exciting contest between two strong teams.

Explaining NFL ATS Bets: What They Are, and the Pros & Cons of Betting Them
What Are Spreads?
Spreads are a point difference placed by sports betting platforms to try to create an even on both ends bet for users to decide between for each game in the NFL betting. Due to the fact that picking a winner in contests would create lopsided odds, spreads were created to give equal opportunity to both sides of the wager.
Reading a Spread
The favorite in the game will have a negative number; that is how much they’ll need to win. For instance, if they are -3.5, they’d need to win by 4 or more in order to cover.
The underdogs have a positive number, which is the window in which they can lose in order to cover. For instance, if a team has a +5.5 spread, they need to lose by 5 or less or win, and they would cover.
Advantages of Placing ATS Bets
Betting on spreads is a great way to find equal odds bets that are much more of a 50/50 style bet and get similar returns to the amount you wager. Betting spreads is also a nice way to take advantage of potential misjudgments from sportsbooks.
Disadvantages of Betting Spreads
Betting spreads are great, but there are downsides. Results are very sporadic in the NFL, and a random play could very easily turn the game against you when it comes to spread betting. There is risk, but as long as you bet responsibly, it’s definitely worth looking into.

NFL Week 6 Against the Spread Predictions: Game-by-Game Analysis
Week 6 of the NFL promises to be filled with some great games and, as a result, great spreads. Here’s a spread analysis of each matchup that is on the schedule.
Broncos at Chiefs (-7.5)
Analysis: As the reigning champs, the Chiefs have had their share of struggles through the early part of the season, but they remain one of the league’s best. QB Patrick Mahomes remains one of the league’s best, yet even he has shown some signs of mortality through the early parts of the year. Against the Broncos, the Chiefs should be able to get back to their best, but Thursday Night Football is never as simple as it seems.
Head Coach Sean Payton’s arrival hasn’t gone according to plan in Denver, as the team has had constant issues through the first five games. QB Russell Wilson has looked better than he did last year, but defensively, the Broncos have heavily regressed, and there have been no signs of it being fixed. Now, traveling to Kansas City to face the Chiefs, they could be in for some trouble.
Writer’s Pick: Chiefs -7.5
Thursday Night Football is always one for chaos, but the Chiefs are trending in the right direction while the Broncos have struggled up to this point. 7.5 points won’t be easy, but the Chiefs look like the much better team to this point and should cover.
Ravens (-5.5) at Titans
Analysis: The
Writer’s Pick: Ravens -5.5
In what is likely a very underrated game, don’t be surprised if this one ends up tight. Still, the Ravens have shown plenty of promise to this point that should carry them to victory here. The Titans have been competitive, but Baltimore should handle business and win by over 5.5 points.

Panthers at Dolphins (-7)
Analysis: QB Tua Tagovailoa may have a great supporting cast, but make no mistakes; he’s played phenomenally. The Dolphins have been one of the most high-powered offenses in the league and should continue to do so even against a quality Panthers team here in Week 6. Defensively, however, the Dolphins have had their share of issues. The arrival of defensive coordinator Vic Fangio promised to bring great play, but so far, things haven’t gone to plan.
The Panthers have looked rough early so far, and that includes first-pick QB Bryce Young. Not that Carolina fans should hit the panic button just yet, but there is needed improvement in order for the Alabama product to succeed in the NFL, but currently, he is struggling with rookie mistakes. Head Coach Frank Reich will look to help him continue growing week to week, we’ll see if the passer can show some growth on the road against Miami.
Writer’s Pick: Dolphins -7
Carolina just hasn’t looked the part up to this point in the season and likely won’t have the firepower to match with the Dolphins offense. The Panthers should improve as the season progresses, but at this time, they seem out of their depth against Miami.

Saints (-3) at Texans
Analysis: The Saints started out the season well but have sputtered since with some injuries. Still, though, the team has plenty of promise with QB Derek Carr under center and the return of RB Alvin Kamara from his suspension. Defensively, the Saints have been very solid. This team has remained competitive in each of their contests, so they will give it their best to beat Houston on the road.
As far as rookie seasons go, QB CJ Stroud has looked phenomenal out of the gates. Head Coach Demeco Ryans has done a great job getting this Houston team to turn things around quickly, and now they play host to the Saints in an intriguing matchup between two teams. Houston is the three-point underdog, but they are definitely capable of taking this one.
Writer’s Pick: Texans +3
Houston has dealt with every bump in the road, but it has been extremely impressive given the circumstances. This contest against New Orleans won’t be easy but expect the Texans to cover and keep this one close if not win at home.

Colts at Jaguars (-7)
Analysis: It was assumed the Colts were in for a rebuilding season, but they’ve still shown signs of life as QB Anthony Richardson has put up some impressive production to spark confidence for the future of the organization. The Jaguars appear to be the likely top team of the division, so scoring a win here could be huge for their season outlook moving forward.
The Jaguars entered the season with high expectations to take the next step as a team but have had their highs and lows through the first five weeks. QB Trevor Lawrence has the capabilities of being a top passer in the league and the supporting cast for the offense to explode. However, the team just needs to find its groove in order to establish themselves as a contender in the league. It’s a decent option when it comes to online NFL betting odds.
Writer’s Pick: Jaguars -7
Week 1 feels so long ago, but the Jaguars seemed to be very controlled offensively against Indianapolis and haven’t shown reason to assume that will stop. Expect Jacksonville to cover in spite of the large spread.

Seahawks at Bengals (-6.5)
Analysis: The Seattle Seahawks had a rough Week 1 to start the season but have bounced back and looked like one of the top teams in the league up to this point. QB Geno Smith has put to rest any concerns that last season was a fluke, and RB Kenneth Walker III has been one of the top runners this season. Defensively, the team has shown plenty of promise as well. Don’t look now, but the Seahawks may be legitimate contenders in the NFC.
Unfortunately for the Bengals, QB Joe Burrow has struggled to overcome his calf injury, and the offense has failed to open up as a result. However, the team has all the talent in the world, so once Burrow is 100%, the team is legit. Defensively, the Bengals have a stout front seven that is great for limiting opportunities both downfield and on the ground. As a result, they’ve been able to hang in games even as the offense is still figuring things out.
Writer’s Pick: Seahawks +6.5
Seattle has looked like the better team this year, point blank, so with a 6.5-point spread, you have to take it. The Bengals should be able to get back on track and work their way back into the AFC playoff picture, but this spread is too large, given the circumstances to this point.

Vikings (-1) at Bears
Analysis: Entering the season, there were high hopes that the Bears were on the right track, but it seems the team has remained largely the same with plenty of struggles on both sides of the football. There have been some flashes, but overall, the season has been rough. The Vikings defense has had its issues all season, perhaps the team can get on track as a result.
Despite the hiring of Defensive Coordinator Brian Flores this offseason, the Vikings have been a mess defensively. The roster talent just isn’t there for the blitz-heavy scheme that Flores runs, and there have been some very low moments as a result.
QB Kirk Cousins and WR Justin Jefferson have been one of the best connections in the league, often keeping games close. However, too many time, the Vikings have fallen short, They’ll look to score a victory against Chicago to get on the right track in Week 6.
Writer’s Pick: Vikings -1
Unfortunately for the Bears, they’ve struggled week in and week out up to this point in the season. Minnesota has had its issues, but it looks a clear step above Chicago. As a result, the Vikings should take this one on the road.

Commanders at Falcons (PK)
Analysis: The Falcons have shown promise offensively on the ground, but the air attack has struggled to this point, with QB Desmond Ridder running the show. The season is still young, but the passing game just has not been there for the offense to fully open up, which has hindered Atlanta’s success five weeks through the season.
Washington hits the road with an interesting start to the season. QB Sam Howell has shown promise with a nice supporting cast of weapons helping the team produce. However, the offensive line has been a weak spot for the team, causing some issues. Defensively, the team has had its issues, but the defensive line has plenty of talent to create pressure for their opponents.
Writer’s Pick: Falcons ML
Both teams enter this contest with a bit of uncertainty on the line that could be put to rest for where these teams stand in the conference. The Falcons have their flaws, but their ground attack should push them into position to win this one.

49ers (-1.5) at Browns
Analysis: Coming off of their bye week, the Browns play host to the San Francisco 49ers where they will look to bounce back from their Week 4 loss to the Baltimore Ravens. QB Deshaun Watson was out for the contest due to a shoulder injury, so the week off should be big to get the team rested before what will be a big time cross-conference game against one of the NFL’s best teams.
RB Christian McCaffery has been the star of the show in what has been one of the best offenses up to this point in the season. The 49ers have a perfect blend of efficient offensive play and a stifling defense to have them looking like one of the favorites to be Super Bowl champions. There is a lot of season left to go, but San Francisco has looked outstanding up to this point.
Writer’s Pick: 49ers -1.5
Beating the Browns won’t be easy, but San Francisco has looked like the best team in the league to this point in the season. Assuming they don’t fall off from how they’ve looked to this point, the 49ers should be able to control and win this game.

Patriots at Raiders (PK)
Analysis: Through five weeks, the Patriots have had a mix of promising play and disappointing moments. QB Mac Jones is the highlight of that, as the offense has been the main question mark of the organization up to this point in the season. Defensively, the Patriots have also started to have injuries pile up with the loss of OLB Matthew Judon and CB Christian Gonzalez. New England has overcome adversity plenty of times before, but they need to do so quickly before they may need to hit the panic button.
The Raiders have their own concerns to the start of the season, as the team won their season opener but have had their share of struggles since then. They’ve had some players already voicing their frustrations to the media, another loss here against New England could create some team turmoil.
Writer’s Pick: Patriots ML
Things have been a roller coaster for New England, but there is still hope for any team coached by Bill Belichick. Against his former protege, the Patriots should be able to score a victory on the road.
Eagles (-5.5) at Jets
Analysis: While most teams can struggle to recapture their momentum after losing in the Super Bowl, the Eagles have kept the ball rolling and have started out the year strong. RB D’Andre Swift has claimed the lead back role of the offense, and it has helped the team dominate on the ground, while QB Jalen Hurts has performed well through the air to make this offense productive.
On top of that, the Eagles defense has been especially impressive up to this point, rookie DL Jalen Carter has been phenomenal up to this point and looks like a superstar for years to come.
For the Jets, things looked bleak following the injury to QB Aaron Rodgers. However, QB Zach Wilson seemed to recapture some of the magic that made him a highly touted prospect, and now the Jets hopes for playoffs are back on the table. Defensively, the Jets will always look impressive, so if the offense can get things going, the Jets could be one of the top teams in the league. Hosting the Eagles, they’ll get a great test in Week 6.
Writer’s Pick: Eagles -5.5
The Jets have had a revived sense of hope in their past couple of weeks, making them an interesting underdog pick, but the Eagles are one of the top teams in the league. It won’t be easy, but Philadelphia should take home the victory and cover the spread.
>> Place your bets at BetUS <<
Lions (-3) at Buccaneers
Analysis: Many were doubtful about the Buccaneers bringing in QB Baker Mayfield to replace Tom Brady as the leader of the offense, but in a game manager role Mayfield has answered the call and kept the ship afloat. The Buccaneers also have an incredibly stout defense that helps limit the opposing teams production to keep games tight. The Buccaneers have plenty of season left to go, but with how things are looking, they have the structure to compete with anybody.
Head Coach Dan Campbell has successfully turned around the Detroit Lions franchise and now the team seems poised to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2016. However, there is still a long way to go until then. RB David Montgomery has played a pivotal role in the team’s identity behind the Lions powerful offensive line. The Detroit secondary has had it’s ups and downs to this point in the season, but if they can hold up well against the Bucs then they could win here on the road.
Writer’s Pick: Buccaneers +3
Week 6 won’t define either one of these team’s seasons, but this is a great contest to find out how the NFC teams shake out. With the Tampa Bay defense poised to slow down the Detroit run game, expect them to keep this one tight.

Cardinals at Rams (-6.5)
Analysis: Head Coach Jonathan Gannon deserves a ton of respect for the way the Cardinals entered the season with low expectations, but have remained competitive in countless games to this point. Now they’ll hit the road to go against their divisional foe in the Los Angeles Rams. Can QB Josh Dobbs and this Arizona team pull off an upset?
QB Matthew Stafford has recaptured his high-level play and while this Rams team entered the season with plenty of questions, but with the emergence of countless players on their roster, they’ve put the questions to rest. Now they look to handle business against the Cardinals.
Writer’s Pick: Rams -6.5
Arizona has proven they won’t be an easy win for anyone this year. However, the Rams are one of the top coached teams in the NFL and has the offensive firepower to establish the lead and cover against the Cardinals.
Giants at Bills (-7)
Analysis: Last season, the New York Giants looked like a team that could compete with anyone. Head Coach Brian Daboll and QB Daniel Jones were in sync and the team looked on their way to building something impressive. However, they’ve had a rocky start to this season and things won’t be easy to fix as they travel to Buffalo for Sunday Night Football.
The Bills have had a much brighter beginning to the season, as they look like a potential Super Bowl contender with the talent to go against and beat anybody. QB Josh Allen is currently the odds on favorite to win the MVP award, and so long as he stays in rhythm, they are the heavy favorite to win at home against the Giants.
Writer’s Pick: Bills -7
Buffalo has proven to be one of the top teams in the league through the early part of the season, while the Giants have been struggling to this point. The Bills should be able to comfortably take this game, and that will be enough to cover.

Cowboys at Chargers (-1)
Analysis: The Los Angeles Chargers play host to the Dallas Cowboys for Monday Night Football where they will look to score a big victory against one of the NFC’s best. QB Justin Herbert has been phenomenal up to this point in the season, but the Chargers have had their issues defensively that has kept them at 2-2 up to this point. The big storyline for this game will be Offensive Coordinator Kellen Moore going against his former team, which could make things interesting.
The Cowboys hit the road with hopes of scoring a big victory on the road. Dallas’ identity this season has been their defense, which has been one of the most dominant units in the league. On the other side of the football, QB Dak Prescott keeps the offense in rhythm to make this team one of the most balanced in the league.
Writer’s Pick: Cowboys ML
In what should be an exciting Monday Night showdown, the Cowboys stack up extremely well against this Chargers team to break this game open. With a 1-point spread, roll with Dallas to cover the spread.
