We are in the midst of the summer break, so it’s the perfect time to start baselessly speculating on who the next PL manager to be sacked will be.
Last season had some memorable candidates and actually broke the record for most managers banished to the shadow realm in one season – a hefty 14. The closest to that current record was 10 in 2017-18 and 2013-14.
While it’s unlikely we’ll hit the same heights this year, there are some intriguing candidates up for the chop already. Will Julen Lopetegui’s time finally run out at the Molineux? Or will Steve Cooper be struck down with second-season syndrome after valiantly keeping Nottingham Forest afloat last year?

Julen Lopetegui – (Wolves) 9/2
The former Spain and Real Madrid boss was tipped by most people to go last year, but after the crazy World Cup infused season came to an end, Lopetegui was still standing – just. His odds reflect the instability and transitional period going on at Wolves right now. They are losing a lot of players this summer, and were already playing uninspiring football to boot. It’s not a bad bet to make, but we’re not sure he’ll be the first.
Paul Heckingbottom – (Sheffield United) 6/1
Heckingbottom has done a fantastic job of getting Sheffield United back into the Premier League, but he won’t have many good memories from the last time he was here. After taking over as interim boss after Chris Wilder left by mutual consent, he was thrown in at the deep end and subsequently endured a 5-0 drubbing to Leicester and three more defeats to consign them to relegation. He was then succeeded by Slaviša Jokanovi?, who only managed to win 6 of 19 games, and thus he was brought back into the fold again – this time on a permanent basis.
It remains to be seen whether he will be up to the test of the Premier League the second time around, but it’s fair to say he’s in a much better position than he was before. If he ends up starting with a string of bad results, anything can happen – so keep an eye on this as a potential punt worth taking.
Steve Cooper – (Nottingham Forest) 15/2
Steve Cooper seemed close to being sacked last season, but Nottingham Forest was rewarded for sticking with their man who inspired an excellent second half of the season that saw them pull out key results to stay in the top flight. 15/2 isn’t a bad price, but we think after last season’s heroics, he’ll be given a much larger grace period than most.
Last on the list of favourites is Marco Silva, who guided newly promoted Fulham to a very respectable 10th-place finish, which exceeded a lot of people’s expectations. So what’s he doing here, then? Well, believe it or not – Fulham were actually doing even better at one point during the season, so their eventual finish may have slightly underwhelmed some.
It remains to be seen whether Silva can pick the momentum back up, but 9/1 is a fair reflection of his chances of being sacked next.
The Premier League Sack Race: The Longshots
Mauricio Pochettino – (Chelsea) 33/1
Old Tottenham boss and ex-PSG man Pochettino mark his return to the Premier League by taking the reigns at Chelsea, who, after last season, will be looking for some form of stability to contrast with the total chaos their campaign was.
The only reason we bring him up as a potential longshot is that there are some quiet question marks over Pochettino’s current ability after a somewhat lacklustre term at PSG. Still, it’ll take a lot for the Argentinian to get the boot before anybody else.
If it wasn’t for West Ham’s fairytale European success last season, we have few doubts that David Moyes would be a lower price than he is right now. Bringing West Ham’s first-ever European trophy home has rightfully given him a little breathing room going into the new campaign, but don’t expect the goodwill to last for too long.
Unai Emery – (Aston Villa) 40/1
Look, we’ve got no real solid reasons to put Emery here. He had an incredible season after taking over from Steven Gerrard, and Villa have looked like a side transformed under his guidance.
40/1 is probably an accurate reflection of his chances of leaving first or being sacked. We just can’t shake the Emery feeling of it all. Perhaps his Arsenal tenure is still too fresh in the mind. Take that how you will.
Sean Dyche managed to undo a lot of Frank Lampard’s damage to Everton last season and save them from relegation, yet he still seems like a reasonable candidate to see the sack next. Why?
Well, Everton are in bad shape. Even managing to survive, they find themselves in a difficult transitional period, and veteran signings such as Ashley Young won’t be doing much to inspire the fans that better times are ahead. We think 12s represents good value here and may be a good bet.
The Premier League Sack Race: The Untouchables
Yep, one of the greatest coaches of all time and the guy who just won the treble is not likely to be the first out of the door this season. He may leave soon – but not first, and he certainly won’t be pushed.
For a long time, it seemed as if Arteta was walking a fine line, with some of the fanbase even demanding his sacking at his lowest points. He’s managed to prove the doubters wrong and led Arsenal through an incredible campaign last year in which they almost won the Premier League.
Adding Declan Rice and Kai Havertz to the squad means he’s in an even stronger position than last year to take another crack at it, and who’d bet against him?
Big Ange’s incredible rise as a manager has culminated in his biggest job yet, taking over at the largely dysfunctional Tottenham Hotspur side badly in need of a new direction, inspiration, and a manager who gives a toss. He will need time, though, and Levy will give it to him – it’s highly unlikely he’ll face the sack, never mind be the first.
After taking over Graham Potter’s Brighton side last season, most people were unaware of De Zerbi or his pedigree as manager. It’s safe to say that’s no longer the case. The Italian has lit the Premier League on fire with his incredible football and has guided Brighton to European qualification for the first time in the club’s history. This man’s not going anywhere. For now.

Affable South Londoner and fan favourite Scott Parker were the first to get the axe last year after being battered 9-0 at Anfield by Liverpool. Some say it was too soon and unfair, but it’s clear there was more going on behind the scenes than meets the eye.
Thomas Tuchel (Chelsea): 7 September 2022
After Chelsea’s former owner Roman Abramovich was ousted, Chelsea was eventually bought out by American billionaire Todd Boehly. It wasn’t long before Boehly laid down the new regime and sacked Tuchel from the club – a decision that many people criticised and resulted in a period of turmoil for the South West London club.
Graham Potter (Brighton): 8 September 2022
Football Manager hero and cult icon Graham Potter finally made his step up into the big(ger) leagues when he left Brighton in September after being picked by Boehly to oversee his new era at the club. This should go great, right?
Bruno Lage (Wolves): 2 October 2022
Bruno Lage’s defensive and sleep-inducing football finally took its toll in October after a 2-0 away loss to West Ham which saw Wolves hit the bottom of the table. The current favourite to be sacked next, Julen Lopetegui took over. We see a pattern developing here, and we’re not sure it’s the managers.
Steven Gerrard (Aston Villa): 21 October 2022
After the Liverpool legend’s extraordinary success with Rangers, Steven Gerrard was brought back down to earth with a bump after failing to make an impact with Aston Villa in the Premier League. He’s since become boss of Saudi Pro League club Al-Ettifaq. (Insert joke about finding his level here).

Southampton were third from bottom and had just endured back-to-back defeats when the board decided to act and sack Austrian tactician Ralph Hasenhüttl.
Frank Lampard (Everton): 23 January 2023
Frank Lampard, who somehow seems to have perfected the art of failing upwards, finally met his downfall at Everton after resigning from the proud club to the bottom of the table. Surely that’ll be the last time we see Frank in the Premier League, right?
Jesse Marsch (Leeds): 6 February 2023
The real-life Ted Lasso (we realise that’s unfair) met his end at Leeds United after losing to fellow relegation strugglers Nottingham Forest 1-0. Truthfully the decision may have been somewhat harsh considering the flux the club was in, but many fans were glad to see the back of him.
Nathan Jones (Southampton): 12 February 2023
Former Luton manager quickly found out the major difference between skill levels in the Championship and the Premier League. His increasingly bizarre press conferences became the main reason he’d be remembered for his mostly bleak time at the south coast club.
Patrick Vieira (Crystal Palace): 17 March 2023
It was a strange end to Patrick Viera’s time at Crystal Palace. He’d initially built an interesting side powered by the talents of dynamite young talents Eze and Michael Olise, but he soon found results began to slip. The Palace board gambled on bringing Roy Hodgson back to save the club from relegation, and it was a move that paid off.
Antonio Conte (Tottenham): 26 March 2023
‘Serial winner’ Antonio Conte, meets ‘serial losers’ Tottenham Hotspur. It’s almost like the unstoppable force meeting the immovable object analogy. So what happened? Well, basically, Conte’s dire football and horrific man management skills ended up alienating essentially the whole club and fans, and he was eventually sacked after throwing a tantrum for the ages in his final press conference. Good riddance, some might say.

Stop us if you’ve heard this one before. A Brendan Rodgers side that starts off well and plays attractive football, and notches up excellent results eventually becomes uninspired, found out, and in danger of serious capitulation. Yep, sorry, Leicester fans – who now occupy a space in the Championship.
