Kit of the Week No.37: Luton Town home 1981-84

LUTON TOWN HOME 1981-84

David Pleat – hardly a household name as a player – masterminded the incredible rise of Luton Town during the 70’s when they were more famous for being supported by comedy god Eric Morecambe. Pleat’s side earned promotion to the First Division at the end of the 81-82 season when they were crowned winners of the second tier – eight points clear of Elton John’s Watford.

The Hatters wore this white and orange Adidas early 80’s style classic kit during their first couple of seasons amongst English football’s elite. Sponsored by Bedford Trucks, this jersey saw the likes of Brian Stein, Ricky Hill, Paul Walsh and Mal Donaghy impress as the club fought relegation in the 82-83 and 83-84 campaigns.

Famously, Luton avoided the drop on the final day of the 82-83 season with a 1-0 victory against Manchester City – a result that helped consign the home side to relegation and will be forever remembered for Raddy Antic’s late winner and, of course, Pleat’s celebratory camp skip across the Maine Road turf.

One of the highlights of those days was their visit to Anfield, home of champions Liverpool who were on a mission to retain the Championship. Pleat’s men managed an entertaining 3-3 draw – not bad considering two different outfield players (Donaghy and Stephens) had to go in goal after regular keeper Findlay went off injured.
