What’s less clear, though, is why Canelo wants this fight, especially against this Charlo.
Canelo and the other Charlo brother, Jermall, have spoken openly about their desires to face each other in the ring. Jermall is also currently the bigger of the twins, fighting at middleweight, so it would be less of a stretch for him to bulk up to take on Alvarez.
However, Jermall has been struggling with mental health issues that have kept him out of action for over two years, so the little brother will have to take up the family’s mantle.
As it is, Jermell will have to go up two weight classes to take on a man who has recently competed at 175 pounds.
Surprisingly enough, though, Jermell is actually the bigger fighter — or at least the taller one with the longer reach. Charlo will face Alvarez while sporting a four-inch height advantage and a two-and-a-half-inch reach advantage.
And hey, this is the first of a three-fight deal that Alvarez signed with PBC, so he’ll have plenty of opportunities to take on the other brother later.

Who’s After Canelo? Potential Opponents for Jermell Charlo’s Next Fight
As we’ve already noted, Charlo has a lot riding on his fight with Canelo. A win instantly makes him a household name, whereas a loss — especially a lopsided one — could relegate him to relative obscurity for the rest of his career.
Still, he’s unlikely to lack a choice of opponent when he enters the ring again after September. He could potentially still be the title holder at junior middleweight if he’s not stripped of the belts for ducking mandatory challenger Tim Tszyu.
Even if he loses his straps, he’s still the biggest name in the division and can get a title shot whenever he wants one.
Jermell Charlo vs. Canelo Alvarez Again
A rematch is only likely if Charlo shocks the world and takes Canelo’s super middleweight championship in September. If that happens, though, a second fight (and probably a third) would become a foregone conclusion.
We’re not sure if Canelo’s contract explicitly guarantees him rematch rights, but when you’re the biggest name in the sport, you have certain privileges that other fighters don’t. He can fight Charlo as many times as he wants.
It will be interesting to see how much interest there would be in a rematch, however. As popular as Canelo is, he’s hardly seen as invincible — the destruction he suffered at the hands of Dmitry Bivol (and three underwhelming bouts with Gennady Golovkin) saw to that.
So if he loses to the much smaller Charlo, will people really turn out to see if it was a fluke?
Or will they simply assume that Canelo’s prime is over and move on to fully appreciating the likes of Terence Crawford and Naoya Inoue instead (which they should be doing anyway)?
Meanwhile, even a close loss to Canelo is probably not enough to justify a rematch, especially when there are other fighters waiting for a shot at Alvarez, like David Benavidez and Charlo’s own brother.
This fight may very well happen — but it might be something that only Charlo wants to see.

Jermell Charlo vs. Tim Tszyu
Charlo had been ordered to defend his light middleweight title against the undefeated Tszyu before opting to take the Canelo fight.
While choosing a likely eight-figure payday over defending the belt is certainly understandable, and we’d never accuse Charlo of ducking Tszyu (yet), the fact remains that this is a fight that many people feel needs to happen.
Technically, Charlo has until September 30 to face Tszyu, but unless he works him in before that fight or does double duty that night, chances are he’ll lose his belts the instant he takes the ring with Canelo.
Having that much time gives Charlo options, though. If he loses to Canelo and wants to get his belts back, then a Charlo-Tszyu fight for the vacant straps makes all the sense in the world.
However, if Charlo beats Canelo or even merely acquits himself well, many people feel he’ll leave the 154-pound division behind and move up to middleweight.
While Charlo has denied that, claiming he still wants to fight at 154 pounds as he “moves up and down” the ranks like Roy Jones, Jr., we’ll believe it when we see it.
That means the pickings are likely slim here for Tszyu. The only way he’ll get to face Charlo for the belt is if the champ is beaten soundly by Canelo, something that would take quite a bit of shine off their matchup.
Instead, it’s likely that Tszyu should start thinking about fighting someone else (likely Brian Mendoza or Sebastian Fundora) for the vacant title.

Jermell Charlo vs. Carlos Adames
Assuming Charlo makes the move up to middleweight, Adames would be an enticing opponent — especially if Jermell is coming off a strong showing against Canelo.
There’s always the possibility that he could skip the line and take on the top dog in the division, Gennadiy Golvkin (more on him in a second), but a clash with Adames would still be an exciting prospect — and one that isn’t without drama.
Adames is currently the WBC interim middleweight champ — why interim, you ask? Because Jermell’s brother, Jermall, hasn’t fought in two years, and while Jermall hasn’t been stripped of his belt yet, the WBC also didn’t want it gathering dust for an indeterminate amount of time.
The plot thickens from here. Jermall has actually claimed that he’s next in line to face Canelo after Jermell, so he might not have any intention of ever defending this belt.
In that case, a smooth transition from Jermall to Jermell would likely be appealing to the Charlo family.
Adames defended the interim crown in June, polishing off Julian Williams in nine rounds in Minneapolis. He would likely be ready for another fight about the same time that Jermell is.
Of course, it’s a big step down in star power from Canelo to Carlos, so if Jermell acquits himself well this month, he might not be interested in this fight.

Jermell Charlo vs. Gennady Golovkin
GGG hasn’t fought since dropping a unanimous decision to Canelo in their third (and presumably final) match last September.
He has also stated that he’s taking an indefinite time off from the fight game.
There are many who think Golovkin should hang up his gloves. While the Canelo fight was close (and there are plenty of fans who believe Triple G should’ve won), Golovkin looked older and slower than he ever has. His best days are undoubtedly behind him.
But this is boxing, where the quality of a fight often takes a backseat to its drawing power. GGG is still the biggest name in the middleweight division and one of the most famous boxers in the world, so if Charlo is chasing another big payday, this would be the fight to make.
A win over GGG — even a diminished GGG — would also burnish Charlo’s reputation.

Depending on how the Canelo fight shakes out, that could put him right back in the hunt for a title shot or establish him as one of the biggest names in the sport.
The fight might not be as tantalizing to Golovkin, however. He’d be risking his reputation against a younger, dangerous fighter, and a win over Charlo — especially if Charlo is coming off a loss to Canelo — won’t do much for his legacy. It might just seem like two guys who couldn’t beat Alvarez fighting over his scraps.
If Golovkin wants to continue establishing his dominance at middleweight, then tilts with Chris Eubank, Jr. or Janibek Alimkhanuly might make more sense.
Alternatively, if he wants one more gigantic payday before retiring, then it seems like Manny Pacquiao’s phone is always on.
Now, if Charlo beats Canelo and still wants GGG, then that changes everything. That’s a lot of “ifs,” though.

Jermell Charlo vs. David Benavidez
This is the fight that — rightfully or wrongfully — many people believe Canelo is avoiding. Charlo could send a message by fighting the man Alvarez seems to want no part of.
Benavidez recently earned a unanimous decision nod over Caleb Plant in a match that most felt would earn the winner a title fight with Alvarez.
Instead, Canelo shocked the world by taking on a fighter two weight classes beneath him instead (and may have plans to follow it up by fighting his brother).
Benavidez is undefeated, and while he’s not a household name, he’s been nothing less than impressive in his career. He likely can make a claim to the next title shot regardless of who wins between Charlo and Canelo, so the likelihood of this fight happening may hinge entirely on the outcome of their clash in September.
It’s all patently unfair for Benavidez, who has done everything he’s supposed to do (namely, beat everyone he faces) to earn a title shot.
Before that happens, though, he may have to put his championship aspirations at risk in a dangerous tune-up fight against someone like Demetrius Andrade, Jaime Munguia, or Edgar Berlanga.
This is boxing, where doing the right thing is rarely rewarded. However, if he keeps beating whoever he goes up against, Benavidez will get his title shot sooner or later.
The only question is who he’ll be facing for it.

Jermell Charlo vs. Terence Crawford
If Charlo is serious about staying at 154 pounds at least some of the time, then this could be the most interesting possibility of all.
The two fighters are no strangers to one another, and Bud Crawford even took time during his thrashing of Errol Spence to turn to Charlo in the crowd and say, “You’re next.”
In this potential super fight, though, Charlo would be the bigger fighter, as Crawford would have to move up from welterweight to make the fight happen.
Given that Charlo is arguably fighting beneath his natural weight as it is, that could represent quite a mismatch in terms of size.
If anyone can overcome those kinds of long odds, though, it’s Crawford, who most people have penciled in as the top pound-for-pound fighter in the sport.
This is also the fight that could be the most rewarding for Charlo — arguably even more rewarding than his bout with Canelo.
Not only will he command a massive payday for a scrap with Crawford, but a win would establish him as one of the best fighters in the game today.
And if he beats both Canelo and Crawford? We’d be talking about an excellent fighter making the leap to becoming legendary.
This would be amazing for boxing fans. The big loser, however, would continue to be poor Tim Tszyu, who would watch Charlo drop back down to 154 pounds, only to skip him over once again.
Of course, this all hinges on the outcome of the second meeting between Spence and Crawford, as Spence has activated his automatic rematch clause.
Given how lopsided their first fight was, however, we’re not holding our breath that there will be a third.

Jermell Charlo vs. Canelo Alvarez Preview, Betting Tips, and Strategies
The Canelo-Charlo match is going to be an interesting contrast in styles.
Alvarez is perhaps the preeminent defensive fighter in the sport, which often lures aggressive boxers in — and ultimately leads to their demise.
While Charlo is undoubtedly aggressive, he’s also quite patient and willing to take his time setting up devastating power shots. He’s unlikely to step in and tire himself out by throwing ineffective bombs into Canelo’s defense.
It will be interesting, then, to see how this chess match plays out.
Jermell Charlo’s Strategy
Make no mistake — while Charlo is patient, he’s undoubtedly a power puncher looking for an early finish. He just spends his time intelligently softening up his opponents before polishing them off.
He likes to stalk his opponents with catlike quickness (potentially explaining the lion costumes he likes to wear to the ring). When he senses weakness, he unloads with power punches, including a devastating left hook.
Despite the aggressiveness, you’re unlikely to see him overreach or get caught off-balance. The fury is entirely calculated.
Given that he’ll be the taller fighter in this one, we’d expect him to try to test Canelo from a distance, only stepping in to deliver that hook if he’s certain the opportunity is truly there.
While Canelo isn’t known as a knockout fighter by any means, he’s still capable of finishing fights (especially against smaller fighters), so we wouldn’t expect Charlo to want to stay in close for very long.
Move in, drop bombs, and get to a safe distance. That’s his key to victory.
Of course, against a fighter of Canelo’s caliber, it’s also easier said than done.

Canelo Alvarez’s Strategy
Despite being perhaps the best Mexican boxer ever — although Julio Cesar Chavez and Ruben Olivares would undoubtedly have something to say about that — Alvarez’s style is something of an enigma.
Or perhaps it would be more accurate to call his style “evolving,” as it’s changed quite a bit since he made his debut.
The “typical” Mexican style is reminiscent of a straight-up brawl: get in close, stand toe-to-toe, and make the other guy submit before he does the same to you.
That was never Canelo’s way. He was a smart, tactical fighter, not a backroom brawler. He preferred to lure you in and unleash counter-shots rather than rely on naked aggression to overpower his opponents.
As a result, many of his countrymen didn’t know quite what to make of him. On the one hand, they embraced him as the next great pugilist in their proud tradition, but on the other, he didn’t quite fit with that tradition.
In recent years, though, Canelo has worked to blend his smart, tactical technique with the more rough-and-ready Mexican style. He now likes maneuvering opponents into the ropes to unleash devastating combos that break their will or end the fight early.
This has made him an extremely balanced fighter. While he has more KOs than decisions on his record by a 2-1 margin, he’s fully capable of winning the long game, racking up points on the way to decision victories, something we expect to see in Canelo Alvarez’s next fight.
However, he can also be brutal when the situation calls for it — just ask Billy Joe Saunders or Avni Yildriim.
As such, he’s likely to accept whatever kind of fight Charlo wants to bring to him. He can sit back, dodge his power shots, and then pepper him with counters, or he can work him into a compromising position and make him pay.
