Brief Recap of the 2022 Delray Beach Open
The ATP Delray Beach Open is a popular event on the ATP tour calendar. Held annually in Delray Beach, Florida, it’s been an outdoor hard court event since 1999. Previous to that, it had been an outdoor clay event since its inception in 1993.
Previous winners include the now-retired Sam Querrey and Kevin Anderson, American Jack Sock and Kei Nishikori.
The 2022 Delray Beach Open kicked off on 14 February. Cameron Norrie went into the tournament as the top seed and favorite – and triumphed in the final with a straight sets victory over second seed Reilly Opelka.
Norrie had to get through two tie breaks in order to seal the deal. He failed to take advantage of five break points, while Opelka couldn’t get anywhere near the Norrie serve and had zero break points all match.
Norrie’s route to the final wasn’t exactly easy. As the top seed, he started his tournament in the round of 16, where he played in-form Oscar Otte, who came into the tournament off the back of a solid run at the AO.
He then defeated Americans Sebastien Korda and Tommy Paul in the quarter’s and semi’s.
There were few upsets at the Delray Beach Open 2022, with the exception being John Millman overcoming Bulgarian third set Grigor Dimitrov 6-4, 6-4 in the quarter-finals.
Millman himself was thwarted in the semi-finals 6-7, 7-6, 6-7 by eventual runner-up Reilly Opelka.
The ATP Delray Beach Open is typically notable for kick-starting the careers of upcoming American players. Frances Tiafoe claimed his only ATP tour title to date in 2018 at Delray Beach, while compatriot Mardy Fish won it in 2009.
It was also one of the first ATP titles that Australian superstar Lleyton Hewitt won back in 1999, his breakout year.

Delray Beach Open Betting Guide
The Delray Beach Open 2023 is one of 10 ATP tour events played in the USA. It’s an outdoor hard-court event that will once more be backed by a strong field of American players.
These include top 10 player Taylor Fritz, who comes into the tournament as the number one seed and top favorite, Tommy Paul, who had a sensational run at the Australian Open recently, and Jenson Brooksby.
Last year’s runner-up Reilly Opelka has confirmed he will take part and he slots in as the number 7 seed. This is despite the fact that he is yet to play a competitive match in 2023.
Fellow big server John Isner will be making an appearance at an event notable for being an American hard-court tournament that he hasn’t won. The Dallas resident has racked up 14 ATP titles in his career and will be looking to make that 15 this February.
A glaring absence is last year’s winner Cameron Norrie, who won’t be returning to Florida to defend his title. As well as a high number of top 30 players, the field is strengthened by a raft of top 60 players. JJ Wolf had a barnstorming run at the Australian Open and will come to Delray Beach full of confidence.
Jiri Lehecka, meanwhile, is truly the one to watch right now. He’s 21, is currently the world number 80 after reaching a career-high ranking of 59 in August 2022, and so far in 2023 has already defeated Alexander Zverev – and current Delray Beach Open champion Cameron Norrie. He beat the Brit 3-2 in the third round of the Australian Open, which is easily his best result to date.
Other notable attendees include Adrian Mannarino, who is currently undergoing a sort of career renaissance despite an early exit at the Australian Open, and American Mackenzie McDonald, who knocked out Rafael Nadal at the AO.
There’s also the small matter of Ben Shelton, a young American who gatecrashed the top 100 for the first time at the end of 2022, and who also enjoyed a stunning run in Melbourne earlier this year.
Taylor Fritz will no doubt enter the tournament as the heavy favorite, but 2023 hasn’t been kind to him so far. He was sent home in the second round of the AO by the hugely unfancied Alexis Popyrin after surprisingly dropping a set against Nikoloz Basilashvili.
We’d therefore swerve the short-priced Fritz and consider backing one of the in-form Americans – either JJ Wolf or Ben Shelton, who, with fire in their bellies right now, will both be on the hunt for their first ATP tour titles in Florida in front of a home crowd.

Delray Beach Open Predictions

Taylor Fritz
Taylor Fritz comes into the Delray Beach Open as the first seed. He’ll be installed as the favorite at online sportsbooks – but he comes into the event in poor form.
Due to his participation at the United Cup in Brisbane, Fritz didn’t play in either of the pre-AO warm-up events in Adelaide. Instead, the Australian Open was his first major tournament of the year.
Fritz was drawn against Georgian number one Nikoloz Basilashvili, whose ranking has taken a hammering in the last two years. Fritz was expected to coast to a 3-0 victory, but surprisingly, he dropped the second set 2-6, eventually running out the 3-1 winner.
He was, however, stopped in the second round by wildcard entrant Alexis Popyrin, who toppled Fritz in five sets. It was a huge setback for Fritz, who, while he reached the semi-finals of the ATP Finals in November, exited in the round of 32 to Gilles Simon at the Paris Rolex Masters.
What can we deduce from this?
There’s no doubt that Fritz loves playing on US soil. He won the Indian Wells ATP 1000 last year and will be looking to win the ATP Delray Beach Open. We’re confident he could go deep, but we would stop short of backing him to be the outright winner. Instead, consider taking him to drop a set in his first match.
Bet on Taylor Fritz at Bovada!
Denis Shapovalov
Canadian number 1 and current world number 22 is one of the best players to watch on court. He has a supreme left one-handed backhand game that evokes memories of Roger Federer in his prime.
Shapovalov has played at the ATP Delray Beach Open before. He reached the semi-finals in 2018, where he lost to eventual winner Frances Tiafoe. Along the way, he beat this year’s top seed Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals.
Shapovalov had a strange 2022. After a poor start, during which he couldn’t seem to buy a win, he kicked somewhat into gear. Shapovalov reached the Korea Open final in October and the Vienna final later the same month.
Fast-forward to 2023 and the Canadian would seem to be taking his second-half of 2022 form into this year. He was defeated in the third round of the Australian Open after putting up a strong show against Hubert Hurkacz.
We strongly fancy Shapovalov to go far at the Delray Beach Open. As the second seed to Fritz, he will be available at a good price to win the whole thing. Because the field is full of players Shapovalov is highly capable of beating, he should make it to at least the semi-finals, provided the draw is kind to him.
Bet on Denis Shapovalov at Bovada!
Yoshihito Nishioka
Yoshihito is no longer a dark horse at ATP 250 events – and he’s most certainly no longer a great unknown to tennis bettors.
In the second half of 2022, lefty Nishioka seemingly came from nowhere to surge to the Citi Open final in August, where he was eventually overcome by Nick Kyrgios. He then won the Korea Open in October and put up a great show at the Adelaide 1 and the Australian Open, where he got to the fourth round.
It’s also key to remember that he overcame the Delray Beach Open second seed Denis Shapovalov in the Korea Open final.
What’s more, Nishioka has a 3-1 record against the top seed and favorite Taylor Fritz. It’s therefore clear that the Japanese number one – who is the fourth seed in Delray Beach – is a major threat and a clear dark horse to win this tournament. If he brings momentum into this event, he could surprise all of his opponents.
Bet on Yoshihito Nishioka at Bovada!
JJ Wolf
24-year-old American JJ Wolf has never won an ATP tour title. He’s spent a lot of his career playing Challenger events, but he came to the attention of tennis fans when he got to the US Open third round in 2020 and again in 2022.
2022 was Wolf’s best season by far on the ATP tour, and he not only broke into the top 100 – he ended the year as the world number 56.
This is a remarkable feat for a player that has confined himself to the US hard courts for much of his career. Indeed, he’s never even competed at Wimbledon. Now that he’s finally out of his comfort zone, it’s expected that 2023 will eclipse 2022 for Wolf, which is evidenced by his phenomenal run at the Australian Open.
The Delray Beach Open might come too soon for JJ Wolf in terms of winning his first ATP title. But here’s the thing: He’ll be unseeded, which means his odds as the outright winner will be excellent. Secondly, US players have a habit of winning this event.
If you don’t bet on JJ Wolf to win the whole thing, a solid bet is to add Wolf 2-0 to your parlays. This is a guy who’s very comfortable on fast hard courts and who loves to play in the USA.
Ben Shelton
Ben Shelton is sort of in the same bracket as JJ Wolf. He’s a young American who recently broke into the top 100, and he went deep at the Australian Open against all odds (Wolf and Shelton met in the fourth round).
However, Shelton is even more of a revelation than Wolf. He’s 20 years old and before the Australian swing, he had never played professional tennis outside the USA.
Shelton is another American who’s played a lot of US hard courts in his time. The Delray Beach Open will certainly suit his game, and it will be interesting to see how he fares.
That all said, Shelton’s form has been patchy since he made his ATP tour debut. Yes, he went deep at the Australian Open but previous to that he lost in the second round of the ASB Classic to Frenchman Quentin Halys, and fell in the qualifying round to James Duckworth at Adelaide.
Our verdict? Shelton is for sure one to watch. It’s asking a lot for him to win the Delray Beach Open, but the smart money might be to bet on him to win his specific matches when he’s the underdog.
What Bets Can I Place on the ATP Delray Beach Open 2023?
Outright Winner
The most obvious bet you can place on the ATP Delray Beach Open before it starts is the outright winner.
For this bet, nothing needs to happen except your man winning the whole thing. It doesn’t matter who they beat or by what score – they just need to get all the way to the final and triumph.
Taylor Fritz is the big favorite for this one.
However, because he comes into the tournament with zero form, it might be a better idea to either back the second favorite Denis Shapovalov to land his second ATP title or to take a wider look at the field.
The likes of Japanese number one Yoshihito Nishioka and American starlet Ben Shelton are certainly the form guys right now.

Moneyline Bets
A tennis moneyline bet is when you bet on a player to win a specific match.
This is a simple bet that’s available in each round, and it can be a hugely profitable bet if you manage to secure great odds.
Moneyline bets at the Delray Beach Open are especially useful if you’re planning to put together a parlay because you can add a few different bets to the same selection.
They also work well if you have a strong hunch about an overpriced underdog.

Game Handicaps
Game handicap bets are available right throughout the Delray Beach Open.
In tennis, a game handicap bet works like this: If – for example – you bet on the favorite to win their match (-2.5), they need to win by more than 2 clear games. If they only win by 2 or less games, you lose your bet.
Referring back to the Delray Beach Open 2022, Cameron Norrie defeated Reilly Opelka 7-6, 7-6 in the final. If you’d bet on Norrie (-2.5), you would have lost your bet because he only won by 2 games.
Game handicap betting on an ATP 250 match can be harder to get right than on a Grand Slam match. This is because there can only be 3 sets at the most. What’s more, the handicap is typically set at -2.5 at most sportsbooks, which doesn’t often generate the best price.
On the flip side, game handicap betting is ideal when you strongly fancy the favorite to thrash their opponent because it has better odds than the moneyline bet.
>> Bovada is the top site for handicap betting (once the odds are out!)
Set Betting
In tennis, you have the chance pre-match to bet on the correct set score.
In an ATP 250 event like the Delray Beach Open, you have the choice between Player A 2-0 or 2-1 or Player B 2-0 or 2-1.
Set betting is notoriously difficult to get right, but it comes with extremely generous odds at times. It’s worth exploring if you have a feeling that an underdog is destined to lose but that they will take a set off the favorite.
There might also be occasions when you think the bookies have underpriced a favorite. In such scenarios, you could bet on the underdog to win 2-0 for big gains.
Underdogs winning 2-0 in tennis is also not unusual. At the Australian Open, the heavy favorite Daniil Medvedev lost 3-0 to Sebastian Korda, for example, while Rafael Nadal lost 3-0 in the second round to MacKenzie McDonald.

Does Kei Nishikori Still Play?
Past ATP Delray Beach champion Kei Nishikori had hip surgery in early 2022 and aimed to be back on the court by the US Open later that year. However, he instead skipped it and planned to hit the Challenger tour instead to gain ranking points and build up fitness. While that didn’t materialize either, it would seem that Nishikori is still planning to return to tennis.
In other words, he’s far from entering the ATP champions tour and legends clinic anytime soon.
