Conor McGregor’s Career at a Glance

McGregor’s Transition to the UFC
White took McGregor back to the States with him, and four months later, the young fighter would be taking on Max Holloway on the undercard of UFC Fight Night: Shogun vs. Sonnen.
McGregor won that bout by unanimous decision, and then he tore through the likes of Dustin Poirier, Dennis Siver, and Chad Mendes before facing Jose Aldo at UFC 194.
Aldo was considered one of the top pound-for-pound fighters in the organization at the time, and many thought McGregor’s Cinderella run to the top of the featherweight division would finally come to an end. How would the Irishman fare against the most elite opponent he’d faced to that point?
Well…McGregor knocked out Aldo in 13 seconds.
Is Conor McGregor the Biggest Star in UFC History?
It was at that moment that it became clear that the UFC had something truly special on their hands. McGregor went from being just another up-and-comer to being touted as having the potential to be the best UFC fighter in history.
Then, at UFC 196, McGregor faced Nate Diaz, who filled in for injured lightweight champion Rafael dos Anjos on short notice. Diaz was a journeyman who was given no shot of beating the seemingly-unstoppable Irishman.
So, of course, he went and choked McGregor out in the second round in one of the biggest shockers in MMA history.
Despite the troubling loss, McGregor’s star barely dimmed. He would avenge that loss to Diaz, dispatch Eddie Alvarez by TKO, and even lose a farcical (yet extremely profitable) boxing match to Floyd Mayweather.

Feud with Khabib Nurmagomedov
The fight with Mayweather may have been the high point of McGregor’s career financially — he made a reported $130 million from the deal — but it’s also the point at which the wheels began to fall off his MMA career.
McGregor was stripped of his lightweight title due to inactivity, and at UFC 223, a fight for the interim belt was set between Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov. Ferguson would have to drop out due to injury, and after a series of disasters befell Nurmagomedov’s prospective opponents, Al Iaquinta was booked at the last minute.
Khabib would absolutely dominate Iaquinta en route to a unanimous victory — but McGregor somehow figured out a way to be the star of a ticket he wasn’t even on.
Days before the event, McGregor and a few friends attacked Khabib’s tour bus with the Dagestani star on board, breaking a window in the process.
This ill-advised attack did several things that McGregor would later regret. First, it started what would be a sequence of legal woes for the Irishman. Second, it got him in hot water with the UFC.
Worst of all for McGregor, though, the attack royally pissed Khabib off. The two would finally meet at UFC 229 in a lopsided affair that mercifully ended with Khabib submitting McGregor with a neck crank.
All of the real fireworks came after the fight, with McGregor, Khabib, and their respective corners all engaging in a brawl both in and out of the Octagon. As a result of this donnybrook, both fighters would receive suspensions from the Nevada State Athletic Commission.
Conor McGregor’s Last Three Fights: How Did They Go?
The fight against Khabib was lopsided enough that there was no real reason to run it back. Instead, he was given a tuneup fight against perennial UFC gatekeeper Donald “Cowboy” Cerrone.
McGregor tore through Cerrone with little trouble, dispatching him in 40 seconds. After the fight, McGregor announced his retirement from fighting. Dana White took McGregor’s retirement so seriously that he immediately booked him to face Dustin Poirier, who McGregor had previously beaten in 2014.
The outcome was different this time, though, as Poirier handed the Irishman his first knockout loss, a TKO in the second round. McGregor’s next bout would be a rubber match with Poirier, one that he’d lose after suffering a gruesome broken tibia in the first round. The loss was McGregor’s third in four fights.
He would then take two years off to heal that leg injury and plot his next move, which would turn out to be coaching The Ultimate Fighter 31 against fan favorite Michael Chandler.

Legal Troubles Faced by Conor McGregor
McGregor has spent more time in courtrooms the past few years than he has in the Octagon, with a series of legal woes ranging from that incident with Nurmagomedov to multiple sexual assault allegations.
He’s also had a series of high-profile scraps with the likes of Machine Gun Kelly, Italian musician Francesco Facchinetti, and of course, Burnie, the Miami Heat mascot.
The fallout from this last incident — in which he repeatedly punched the mascot in a stunt designed to promote a pain relief product McGregor endorses — has yet to come. If he’s prosecuted for assault, it could throw any future fights into doubt, especially given his less-than-stellar legal record over the past few years.

Assuming McGregor ever takes center stage in the Octagon again, his next fight will be must-see viewing for MMA fans everywhere. Is he the same fearsome fighter who knocked out Jose Aldo in 13 seconds or the also-ran who’s dropped three of his last four?
The success of his comeback may hinge largely on who his next opponent is. Here are the fighters we think make the most sense.
Michael Chandler vs. Conor McGregor
This is a bit of a cheat, seeing as how he’s currently scheduled to fight Chandler sometime this fall (the actual date won’t be announced until TUF’s finale on August 15th).
However, as McGregor well knows, a fight can fall through at any minute, so we wouldn’t consider this one a done deal until both fighters actually step into the Octagon together.
A fight with Chandler would be intriguing, however. The all-time Bellator wins leader, Chandler has long coveted a fight with the Notorious one — and it’s finally within his grasp.
Chandler’s all-out, safety-be-damned style has made him a fan favorite among MMA junkies, but it’s also the type of style that a sneaky counterpuncher like McGregor excels against. Indeed, many current UFC fighters — including McGregor’s longtime nemesis Dustin Poirier — think the Irishman would win this one early.
Another issue with Chandler’s candidacy is that, while he has a pocket of dedicated followers, he’s not a huge name within the sport. While McGregor is far from the all-world fighter he used to be, he’s still the biggest name in the sport and, as such, could pick his own opponent — and he might want someone who would generate a bigger payday.
Former champ Henry Cejudo thinks that’s exactly what will happen and that the Chandler fight will be scrapped to give McGregor a bigger fish to fry (including a couple of names on the list below).
Will the Chandler fight actually happen as scheduled, or will someone else end up taking on McGregor this fall? We’ll all just have to wait and see.

Charles Oliveira vs. Conor McGregor
Oliveira is a special case. Once seemingly destined to be a bottom feeder in the lightweight division, Oliveira has since established himself as a force to be reckoned with.
About the only thing separating him from the elites in the MMA world is a title shot — but with the winner of the upcoming Dustin Poirier-Justin Gaethje fight likely having dibs on the champ, it seems he’ll have to wait a bit longer at least.
Even his biggest detractors can’t say he hasn’t earned it; with a recent first-round finish of Beneil Dariush, about the only lightweight Oliveira hasn’t beaten is the champ, Islam Makhachev — oh, and Mcgregor too, of course.
For his part, Oliveira has suggested that the Notorious One has ducked him in the past. If there’s any truth to that, then it’s unlikely that McGregor would want him now, with Oliveira at the peak of his powers and McGregor coming off a years-long break.
Oliveira would no doubt prefer a rematch with Makhachev and a shot at the title, but getting a huge payday to take on a possibly washed-up McGregor would be a nice consolation prize.

Will Conor McGregor Fight Tony Ferguson?
This fight would make a lot of sense from an MMA standpoint — but it wouldn’t exactly move the needle for anyone.
At one point, these two seemed to be on a collision course, with even Dana White admitting that a bout “had to happen.” That was way back in 2017, though, and a lot has happened since then for both men — and, at least in MMA terms, very little of it was good.
Since then, both fighters have beaten Cowboy Cerrone — and that’s about it. McGregor has lost the three other times he’s stepped in the Octagon, and Ferguson is on a four-loss streak himself. Both men also have several assault arrests on their records since then.
There’s one key difference, though: millions of people won’t fork over $80 to watch Tony Ferguson.
In his defense, Ferguson’s losses have come to the cream of the lightweight crop, including the likes of Justin Gaethje, Charles Oliveira, and, yes, Michael Chandler. Still, the results suggest he’s a gatekeeper and not a headliner.
Ferguson is on the books to fight Bobby Green in July, so if he were to fight McGregor, it likely wouldn’t happen until the end of the year.
If McGregor wants to set himself up with a relatively easy comeback match, then fighting Ferguson might make sense. He can get bigger fish (and bigger paydays) with other fighters, though, so there’s little reason to think this fight ever happens.

Kamaru Usman to Fight Conor McGregor
Yet another fighter who was once on top of the world but now finds himself on a losing streak, Usman might be the biggest name (in the UFC, anyway) that McGregor could realistically match up against.
At one point in consideration for the top pound-for-pound fighter in the organization, Usman lost his last two matches, both against Leon Edwards. While he’s not in any danger of falling out of the top contender ranks at welterweight anytime soon, Usman needs a big win in his next fight to stay in title contention.
A win over McGregor might not move the needle very much from an MMA perspective in 2023, but it would be one of the biggest PPVs in UFC history — something Dana White might feel compelled to reward down the line.
Usman matches up well with the Irishman, as he would likely be able to dominate the smaller fighter with his superior wrestling skills. Taking this fight would also mean a step up in weight for McGregor, but it could start him on the journey towards being the first fighter to win a belt in three different weight classes as well — something that no doubt appeals to his ego.
Fighting Usman probably isn’t the smartest idea, but McGregor isn’t necessarily known for smart decisions — and that aforementioned ego might just lead him to believe he can handle a bigger, stronger grappler like Usman in the Octagon.

Is Islam Makhachev Going to be McGregor’s Next Opponent?
At first, glance, granting McGregor an immediate shot at the lightweight champ would seem like quite the reward for the Notorious One. However, this fight might be more of a prize for Makhachev.
A virtual clone of Khabib Nurmagomedov, both men were trained by Khabib’s father — and both fight in very similar, grappling-heavy styles. We saw how effective that was against McGregor when Khabib did it, and there’s no reason to think Makhachev wouldn’t be equally dominant.
That means that a fight with McGregor would set Makhachev up with the biggest payday of his career against a fighter who seemingly offers little danger. Hard to see him passing that up, even if McGregor doesn’t truly deserve the opportunity.
Throw in the lingering bad blood from the window-breaking incident on the bus, and this is a fight that Dana White could easily hype — at least until the opening bell, anyway. The rest of the lightweight division might mutiny if McGregor gets this opportunity, but the financial aspect is appealing enough that we can’t completely disregard the possibility.

Dustin Poirier vs. Conor McGregor
This fight is another that would make a lot of sense. On paper, Poirier won the rubber match, and so you’d think this feud would be sufficiently quelled, but the final bout between the two ended in a highly unsatisfying manner, with McGregor having to withdraw after his leg snapped.
That’s enough of a loophole to create the possibility of Part 4 to this rivalry. Whether anyone truly wants to see another sequel to this franchise is another question entirely.
Poirier has publicly said that he’s done with the rivalry, as he’s clearly seemed the better fighter the last two times these men have faced each other. Then again, he also said that he’d fight McGregor again “just for money.”
The Notorious One isn’t as ready to let the bad blood settle as he’s claimed on multiple occasions that their feud isn’t over. He could likely force the issue if he complained loudly enough, but after his last few showings against Poirier, he’s probably not too eager to jump back in the ring with the American anytime soon.

Conor McGregor vs. Nate Diaz
How’s this for a money grab? These two never actually settled their rivalry, as the series between the two men are tied, but this fight might be better suited for kickstarting a UFC Seniors Tour than headlining a modern PPV.
To be fair, Diaz has never backed down from a fight, and he’s put on some spectacular shows when the public has counted him out. But the man’s 38 years old, and he seems to be retired from cage fighting, choosing instead to chase a different payday by boxing Jake Paul in August.
He also doesn’t currently have a UFC contract, which may be no small sticking point. White could sign him at any moment and likely would if the potential return was high enough, but Diaz has never been afraid to hold out to get all that he feels he’s worth — something that might force White away from the bargaining table in frustration.
Diaz is still confident that a rubber match will happen, but as more time passes since the last fight, it becomes harder to see how that match will ever materialize in the Octagon.
Maybe they can box on the undercard of the next Jake Paul PPV? Who knows!

Jake Paul vs. Conor McGregor
Paul’s many fights are heavily discussed among bettors – such as Jake Paul vs. Andrew Tate bout, for example – and yes, McGregor is also heavily discussed to be among the future opponents of the problem child.
If you’re going to sell out, you might as well sell out all the way.
The former YouTube and Disney sensation has hinted that he wants to transition from boxing to MMA soon, and he’s also stated that he wants McGregor to be his inaugural fight.
Paul told TMZ in 2020 that he’d offered McGregor $50 million for an MMA bout, but nothing ever came of the proposal (if it even existed). We’re not sure if a fight between the two would happen in the UFC or as an independent joint venture between the two men, but the gate from such a fight would likely be spectacular.
To Paul’s credit, no one gave him much respect as a boxer, but he’s been surprisingly successful in the ring (more successful than McGregor, anyway). He may just have more MMA chops than anyone would expect.
Still, a bout between these two would be a spectacle first and foremost. These guys share two great passions in life, which is to hear themselves talk and count their money, so it’s hard to see how this fight doesn’t happen — but equally hard to see how it happens when McGregor still has hopes of mounting a legitimate comeback within the UFC.
