College Football Week 8 (Oct. 17th – Oct. 21st) Spread Analysis & Match Up Overview
Week 8 is action-packed with great games and promises to be an extremely influential week to the overall college football picture. Before the action starts, though, take a look at the current spreads on each game, finding the best betting picks for each contest.
Duke Blue Devils at Florida State Seminoles (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Florida State -7.5
Analysis: In a game between two very impressive teams, the Duke Blue Devils travel to Tallahassee for a chance to knock off the conference favorite and establish themselves as the top dogs of the ACC. QB Riley Leonard is the star of this team who gets the attention, but Duke’s offensive line is one of the best in the country and helps this team compete with anyone in the country. It won’t be easy, but this team has knocked off some great teams already to this point, they’re more than capable of doing it again.
The Seminoles entered the season as one of the hottest ball clubs and one of the more well-rounded teams in the nation. Offensively, they’re difficult to match up against with star WRs Keon Coleman and Johnny Wilson on the outside, and defensively, they have tons of talent all over the field to limit opposing teams. They’ll still have plenty of season left, but if the Seminoles can win this one, they’ll be in a great position for a potential playoff appearance.
Writer’s Pick: Duke +7.5
The Seminoles are on their way to a great season, but that doesn’t mean it won’t come without close calls. The Blue Devils have a very strong team and offensive line to help them compete with anyone, so expect a tight battle here where Duke is able to keep it within a score.

Penn State Nittany Lions at Ohio State Buckeyes (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Ohio State -3.5
Analysis: With the arrival of QB Drew Allar, the Penn State Nittany Lions seem more poised than ever to potentially break into the next tier of college football, and potentially compete with some of the best teams in the country. That now comes here in Week 8 as they travel to face off with the Buckeyes. Head Coach James Franklin will have this team prepared to compete, but anything other than victory will be a disappointing result.
Things started out rocky for the Buckeyes entering the year but now that the offense is in rhythm the confidence is back for this team as they come into their next big test. The Buckeyes have arguably the best WR room in the nation headlined by Marvin Harrison Jr and Emeka Egbuka. However, the secondary of the defense will need to limit the Nittany Lions in order to hold off the upset.
Writer’s Pick: Ohio State -3.5
In what could be a defining game for both team’s playoff chances, the Buckeyes get the nod in this one due to their historic success. With the offense looking improved, the Buckeyes have the firepower to handle business here and pull out a major home victory against their toughest competitor until their regular season finale against Michigan.

Washington State Cougars at Oregon Ducks (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Oregon -7
Analysis: QB Cam Ward has come into this season on fire and will remain the face of this Washington State team looking to make some noise as they travel to Oregon to face the Ducks. The Cougars have been well-tested in the past three weeks facing off against Oregon State, UCLA, and Arizona. Now they get arguably their hardest match of the season in Oregon. Can the Cougars work some magic on the road?
While Washington State’s QB has been phenomenal, Oregon’s Bo Nix has been equally as impressive to this point in the season. The Ducks have a prolific offense that allows them to put points up in every game, but their defense is strong enough to allow them to control contests. The Ducks are still looking to potentially make a run for a chance at playing in the Pac 12 championship, so expect them to be locked in.
Writer’s Pick: Oregon -7
This is a great Pac-12 matchup but the Oregon Ducks seem to be on another level compared to this Cougars team. Seven points won’t be easy, but if the Ducks are at their best they could open this one up and comfortably cover this college football spread.

Tennessee Volunteers at Alabama Crimson Tide (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Alabama -4.5
Analysis: Tennessee hits the road to face off against the Crimson Tide with hopes of repeating their upset from last season. The Volunteers suffered a tough loss in Week 3 to the Gators that killed some of the hype, but they’ve bounced back well in the past three weeks, and could fully re-establish themselves as one of the top teams with a win here against Alabama.
The Crimson Tide have had a disappointing season for Alabama standards, but the team has started to find their groove. QB Jalen Milroe has established himself as the top option to lead the team going forward, and he’s shown nice growth since his early season struggles. The Crimson Tide still have work to do and growth that still needs to be had, but a nice win against Tennessee will instill a lot of confidence back into this team’s potential.
Writer’s Pick: Alabama -4.5
This is a game of disappointing expectations, but it is also still a game between two good programs. The Crimson Tide seem to be working in the right direction each week with Milroe at QB though, expect Alabama to continue progressing and score a nice victory here at home.

Utah Utes at USC Trojans (Oct. 17th)
Spread: USC -6.5
Analysis: Despite all the great games on the Week 8 calendar, this one may have the most attention nationwide. A rematch of last season’s Pac 12 championship between two teams back with high aspirations in mind, this game promises to be a marquis matchup and a defining moment of the season for both programs.
The USC Trojans have repeated a lot of what we knew from last season. QB Caleb Williams remains one of the best playmakers in the country, and has a real chance to be the first repeat Heisman winner since Archie Griffin did it in 1974/1975. Defensively, the Trojans have a solid front seven, but they still have some issues in the secondary that if exploited could create some issues.
As for Utah, the team held up well in the absence of QB Cameron Rising, but now that he’s returned the Utes have what it takes to go toe to toe with anybody. Head Coach Kyle Whittingham has consistently kept this Utah team competitive, and in a highly competitive game on the road against the Trojans, they’re bound to come out fast.
Writer’s Pick: USC -6.5
In what will likely be the game of the week, the Trojans look to get revenge on a Utah ball club that had their number last season. The Utes remain a very strong team, but expect USC to prevail in this one and escape with the victory while covering the spread in the process.

Clemson Tigers at Miami (FL) Hurricanes (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Clemson -2.5
Analysis: The
Writer’s Pick: Miami (FL) ML
Clemson is a very good team on paper, but things haven’t clicked this season. Despite the recent history playing to Clemson’s favor, the Hurricanes have flat out looked like the better team this season. Expect Miami to be able to withstand this tall task and pull out the victory.

Texas Longhorns at Houston Cougars (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Texas -12.5
Analysis: Fresh off a victory against Oklahoma in the Red River Rivalry, the Longhorns will need to focus up as they hit the road to travel to Houston where they’ll face off against the Cougars. Despite being the heavy favorite, the Longhorns have had their struggles this season in the “smaller” games and they need to correct that in order to complete a full season of work. QB Quinn Ewers will play a big part in that, when he’s at his best, this Longhorns team is hard to beat.
Houston hosts the Longhorns in Week 8 as a team that hasn’t been very good to this point in the season. With blemishes like a loss to Rice, and getting beaten handily by TCU, they’re not expected to make much of this one. However, don’t overlook them. QB Donovan Smith was the starter last season when Texas Tech knocked off Texas, and the defense has some bright spots. It won’t be easy, but don’t count out the Cougars in this one.
Writer’s Pick: Houston +12.5
Texas has a tendency to play to their opponent’s level, so while they are the better team than Houston, they likely won’t dominate this one. The Longhorns probably win still, but expect the Cougars to keep it close with home field advantage.

South Carolina Gamecocks at Missouri Tigers (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Missouri -6.5
Analysis: The Gamecocks have had about as hard a road as anybody in college football, but they’ve held up admirably. QB Spencer Rattler and WR Antwane Wells Jr are one of the best connections in football, and Head Coach Frank Beamer has established himself as a great coach. The Gamecocks entered this season with plenty of inexperience, so each week is valuable. Could it all lead up to a big Week 8 upset over the Tigers?
Missouri has been one the surprise teams of the season with their strong start to this point in the season. The Tigers defense is filled with experience with pieces like LB Ty’Ron Hopper, CB Kris Abrams-Draine, and DL Darius Robinson all leading the way. On the offensive side of the football, WR Luther Burden III is the star, as he finds a way to produce regardless of opponent. If he comes up big in this one, it will be huge for Missouri’s chances. The Tigers will need to come in playing at a high level in order to continue their success at home here against the Gamecocks, but they have the pieces necessary to do so.
Writer’s Pick: Missouri -6.5
This game could be the hardest betting decision of the week. South Carolina has had their bright moments and bad times all season. If they come out playing strong, they can compete with anyone. However, Missouri’s experience should prevail and help them win and cover against the Gamecocks.

TCU Horned Frogs at Kansas State Wildcats (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Kansas State -4.5
Analysis: In a rematch of last season’s Big 12 championship, the TCU Horned Frogs travel to Kansas State in hopes of getting revenge from last season’s loss. This isn’t the same TCU team, but this still promises to be an exciting affair.
For Kansas State, QB Will Howard has been the trusty leader of this team but the rushing attack of Treshaun Ward and DJ Giddens help keep the team on a balanced attack that is hard to match up against. Defensively, the Wildcats continue to look strong with DE Khalid Duke helping generate pressure off the edge consistently to make opposing quarterbacks uncomfortable. The Wildcats will bring plenty of momentum into this contest as well, if not for a 61 yard field goal, they could be walking into this game undefeated with plenty of fire to keep things rolling.
For TCU, the Horned Frogs bounced back well after a Week 1 loss to Colorado. QB Chandler Morris has been effective through the air while the rushing attack has been promising as well. Defensively, TCU has plenty of impressive pieces but it’s LB Johnny Hodges who leads the unit. Even though this Horned Frogs team had a lot of roster overhaul from last season, there is still plenty of fire from this program to avenge last year’s loss in the Big 12 championship.
Writer’s Pick: Kansas State -4.5
The Wildcats have a solid foundation on the line of scrimmage that should allow them to get a leg up in this game and take advantage on the scoreboard. TCU will come in with a chip on their shoulder that makes this line interesting, but Kansas State should prevail.

Wisconsin Badgers at Illinois Fighting Illini (Oct. 17th)
Spread: Wisconsin -2.5
Analysis: The Fighting Illini endured a rocky start to the season falling to 1-3 but has recovered well on the year to now add some quality stakes to this game against the Badgers. WIth the uncertainty of the Big Ten West division, Illinois is still very much in play to potentially get into the Big Ten Championship, but it will be crucial to succeed here against Wisconsin. The DL of Illinois with Jer’Zhan Newton, Keith Randolph, and Gabe Jacas is impossible to match up against. That could play to their favor in this one.
Head Coach Luke Fickell has shown some needed development to the Wisconsin offense as they open things up offensively more routinely through each contest. Still though, the team’s identity is their rushing attack behind RBs Braelon Allen and Chez Mellusi. The Badgers will have their work cut out for them in an evenly-matched game against Illinois, but both teams are more than capable of taking this one.
Writer’s Pick: Illinois ML
The Illinois defense is one that will create issues against any opponent. Wisconsin has had their flashes but they’ve struggled to consistently get going to match up in this one, and the Illini should pull out the victory as a result.
