College Football Week 6 (Oct. 4th – Oct. 7th) Spread Analysis & Match Up Overview
Week 6 is the halfway point for a lot of programs, and with each game, we start to gain more clarity for how the season will shake out. Before any teams can compete for conference championships, make a bowl game, or hoist trophies: they must handle business in the regular season. Here are some of the top games and betting matchups for Week 6 of the college football season.
Nebraska Cornhuskers at Illinois Fighting Illini (Oct. 6th)
Spread: Illinois -4.5
Analysis: The Cornhuskers come into this Friday contest 2-3 on the season and a bit underwhelmed by the expectations they had hoped for. However, they have a chance to get back to .500 in a big in-conference match-up here.
QB Jeff Sims could be a pivotal part of the team’s success as he has the potential to produce, but when he turns the ball over it’s costly to the success of the team. If Nebraska wants to win this one, ball security will play a major part in that.
For the Fighting Illini, they come into the contest as the betting favorite with aspirations of winning their division in hopes of competing for the Big Ten Championship. QB Luke Altmyer has provided this team with a strong sense of dependability on offense, but it’s the team’s defense that gives this program its identity. If they’re at their best, they should be able to handle Nebraska.
Writer’s Pick: Illinois -4.5
This Friday night contest is one that should be quite intriguing for helping shape the Big Ten West, but expect Illinois to pull this one out. With their more cohesive offense and deeper depth, they have an advantage over the Cornhuskers to win this one safely in hand.

Kentucky Wildcats at Georgia Bulldogs (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Georgia -24
Analysis: The Wildcats enter this game undefeated, with victories over Florida and Vanderbilt, but Georgia is a different beast. Kentucky has some intriguing offensive ability, though, behind QB Devin Leary, who has helped the offense come into its own. With the surrounding weapons and the help of Offensive Coordinator Liam Coen, this team has the offensive potential to match up well with anyone.
On the opposing side, the Georgia Bulldogs roll into the season with their usual dominance. On the offense, the team has one of the best players in the country with TE Brock Bowers.
However, it’s their control on the line of scrimmage that helps set up big time opportunities on the ground and through the air. Defensively, the team continues to dominate. With a front seven that is tenacious on any ordinary program, they will look to make Devin Leary uncomfortable in order to get ahead and keep this game in hand.
Writer’s Pick: Georgia -24
Kentucky is a very good team. Unfortunately, Georgia is a dominant one. Even with this large spread, the Bulldogs should be able to maintain control and get this Kentucky offense out of rhythm. Ultimately leading to one of many blowouts for the Bulldogs this season.

Arkansas Razorbacks at Ole Miss Rebels (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Arkansas -2.5
Analysis: The Razorbacks are one of the best teams on the ground, and they’ll lean on that in order to get ahead in this one as they travel to Oxford. QB KJ Jefferson and RB Raheim Sanders both offer tremendous frames, well over 230 pounds, that wear down defenses over the course of a game. Then on the defense, the team has a well-balanced unit to match up against the Ole Miss offensive attack. Despite being underdogs, Arkansas is bound to create some issues in this one.
Ole Miss comes into this one off one of the more difficult early season schedules in college football, but they still offer plenty of promise as a team. RB Quinshon Judkins is the centerpiece of this team, with an impressive passing attack to make things difficult for opposing defenses. The Rebels will have their hands full with this Arkansas team, but they are better than their rough start and have the firepower to compete in this one.
Writer’s Pick: Arkansas -2.5
Ole Miss is a very good football team, but this Arkansas ground attack is nasty, and it could create issues. The Razorbacks have a backfield that will be hard to contain, and despite being on the road, they should be able to pull off a big in-conference victory here.

Alabama Crimson Tide at Texas A&M Aggies (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Alabama -4.5
Analysis: Head Coach Nick Saban had his doubters entering the season, but the Crimson Tide remains one of the nation’s best. However, they’ll be put to the test again entering October as they travel to College Station, where they’ll face off against the Aggies.
QB Jalen Milroe will need to be on his A-game in this one, but he has some experience to lean on with helping start for Alabama in their 24-20 victory over Texas A&M last season, which could play to their favor in this one.
After a disappointing 2022 season, the Aggies have started red hot in 2023. Now they get the chance to elevate themselves to the next level of hype if they can beat the Crimson Tide at home here in Week 6. QB Conner Weigman and WR Evan Stewart make for a dynamic duo in the passing game, but the defensive talent is what puts this program over the top.
Texas A&M still has a long way to go, but they’re on track for what could be a special season.
Writer’s Pick: Texas A&M +4.5
The Aggies are on a mission this season and appear to be much more legitimate than people are ready to give them credit for. While young, this team has the talent to compete with anybody, and that includes the Crimson Tide. They could very well take this game outright, but expect them to cover the spread at least.

Oklahoma Sooners vs Texas Longhorns (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Texas -9.5
Analysis: For both programs, this is a game they’ll consistently have circled on their calendar right when the schedules are made official. This one brings a bit more intensity, as it will be the last time these two programs face off as Big 12 members.
Texas comes into this one with high expectations of potentially winning the Big 12, and with the offensive fire-power they possess, they definitely have the chance. A big step in that journey will come here against the Sooners. QB Quinn Ewers has the surrounding weapons for the offense to explode, and the Longhorns have the advantage with their dominant 49-0 victory over Oklahoma last year. They likely won’t get the same result, but they’re still coming in with the advantage.
Oklahoma was disappointing last season, but they seem to be on track for a good season this time around. However, this Texas Longhorns are likely their toughest challenge to date. QB Dillon Gabriel wasn’t active in their game last year, but with him healthy this time around, they stand a better chance. The Sooners are underdogs in this one, but they’re a competitive team with a chance to make some noise.
Writer’s Pick: Texas -9.5
The Red River Rivalry is one of the most notorious in college football, so both teams will come in with intensity. However, the Longhorns appear to be the stronger team and should be able to control this one well enough to push them over both on the scoreboard and in the books.

Colorado Buffaloes at Arizona State Sun Devils (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Colorado -5
Analysis: After two losses in a row, the Buffaloes will have to overcome some adversity on the road against Arizona State. QB Shedeur Sanders and WR/CB Travis Hunter are still superstars and will play a big piece in the team’s success, but they still need to give a full team effort in order to succeed against a quality opponent in the Sun Devils. However, they have the pieces to be up for the challenge.
The Sun Devils have started off to a quality start under new Head Coach Kenny Dillingham, but they’re still quite young and inexperienced. QB Jaden Rashada is the leader of this offense, and he’s shown some good flashes, but in a game where Arizona State will need to put up a lot of points to compete, he’ll be put to the test.
Writer’s Pick: Colorado -5
This hasn’t been an ideal past two weeks for the Buffaloes, but that doesn’t diminish where this team is at when playing well. Against Arizona State, they should be able to regather, rebound, and ultimately come away victorious. Take the Buffaloes to cover.

Central Florida Golden Knights at Kansas Jayhawks (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Kansas -3.5
Analysis: Central Florida is led by QB John Rys Plumlee on the offensive side of the football and their RB duo of RJ Harvey and Johnny Richardson. Head Coach Gus Malzahn has done a great job turning this UCF team back into an impressive team, and they could potentially contend for the Big 12 title in their first season as a member, but this Kansas game won’t be easy. They need to prove to be ready to go against some of the best.
For Kansas, they’ve had their ups and downs this season, but they have plenty of flash to compete with anyone. Head Coach Lance Leipold has done a tremendous job turning the program around, and QB Jalon Daniels has been the centerpiece of it. The Jayhawks still have their issues, but a big win over Central Florida could help them really hit their stride.
Writer’s Pick: Kansas -3.5
The Big 12 is a bit unknown, so this game could have major implications that aren’t being recognized right now. However, Jalon Daniels is an extremely talented quarterback who should be able to put this Jayhawks team on his back and carry them to an impressive victory here against the Golden Knights.

Maryland Terrapins at Ohio State Buckeyes (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Ohio State -21
Analysis: QB
Writer’s Pick: Ohio State -21
Ohio State is starting to get in rhythm, and a team like Maryland is a great barometer to officially declare themselves back on track. The Terrapins are plenty talented, so they’ll have their moments, but when the Buckeyes get rolling, they are one of the top teams in the country. That should be what pushes them over the top here to win and cover the spread.

Washington State Cougars at UCLA Bruins (Oct. 7th)
Spread: UCLA -6.5
Analysis: QB Cam Ward has been a star for Washington State, but the Cougars have had their troubles this season. Still, they’ve remained competitive, so going on the road to face off against the Bruins they’ll look to finally pull out a victory in these contested contests. The concern in this one for Washington State is their defense, where they’ve struggled to hold up against offenses. However, if they can hold up in this one, they could score a nice win for their season.
UCLA has started off to a solid start this season, with freshman QB Dante Moore handling the offense. The Bruins still have their questions though, so they’ll have a good challenge here at home against the Cougars. The Bruins are the favorite in this one, but it won’t be easy. A win in this one could be a nice victory to put them on the path to a successful year.
Writer’s Pick: Washington State +6.5
This should be an intriguing contest, but the experience at QB makes the Cougars a contender to make this one closer. Cam Ward has looked sharp to this point in the season, and assuming he continues playing at a high level in this one, the Bruins may struggle to cover.

San Jose State Spartans at Boise State Broncos (Oct. 7th)
Spread: Boise State PK
Analysis: In a Mountain West battle between two very good programs, the San Jose State Spartans come into this contest with an underwhelming record, but one that will likely serve them well for the long term. With a tough out-of-conference schedule, the Spartans should now be prepared to compete for a Mountain West title. Unfortunately, they get an early draw with an equal contender in Boise State.
The Broncos have had a challenging start to the season as well, with games against Washington, UCF, and Memphis prior to this contest. So Boise State enters this game with similar preparation from their out-of-conference slate that will go a long way to their in-conference success. Boise State is led by dual-threat QB Taylen Green and RB George Holani, who are going to have to come up big in this one if they want to win. It won’t be easy, but the Broncos are more than capable.
Writer’s Pick: San Jose State PK
Both teams will come in with a chip on their shoulder to score a big win despite the less-than-ideal starts to their season. Regardless, only one team can prevail. The Spartans have an intriguing offensive attack, but it’s their defensive pressure that should help get them the edge in this one. Regardless of the outcome, both teams should be very competitive in conference play.
