College Football Week 5 (Sep. 28th – Sep. 30th) Spread Analysis & Match Up Overview
Conference play is here and teams are starting to compete with their intentions set toward contending for a conference title. With so many big time matchups with football weekend, there are a lot of great games that will have major implications on the conference hierarchies going forward. Who will prevail in the face of adversity, and who will falter nearly halfway through the season?
Utah Utes at Oregon State Beavers (Sept. 29th)
Spread: Utah -4.5
Analysis: For Utah, this season has started off great. Despite QB Cam Rising needing to miss time this season to heal, the Utes have remained unbeaten, and now that Rising is back, they look to be in full swing. The Utes have a balanced offense and a strong defense capable of matching up with some of the nation’s best teams. They remain a heavy contender to win the Pac 12 this season but will need to pull off a big victory on the road here against Oregon State.
Oregon State also enters this game undefeated with an offense that is very impressive. Transfer QB DJ Uiagalelei and RB Damien Martinez receive plenty of opportunities behind this Beavers’ dominant offensive line, and they’ve taken advantage. Oregon State was a surprise team last season and remains a bit underrated heading into this year. A win against the reigning Pac 12 champion could make sure no one is underestimating them going forward.
Writer’s Pick: Oregon State +4.5
Utah is in for a great season and may even walk away victorious in this one. However, Oregon State has one of the best offensive lines in the country, and they do a tremendous job setting up opportunities on the ground and through the air. With them also being at home, this one will be tight, so expect the Beavers to cover and possibly pull off the upset.

Texas A&M Aggies at Arkansas Razorbacks (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Texas A&M -3
Analysis: In an underrated SEC matchup, the Aggies and Razorbacks meet up at AT&T Stadium for what should be an exciting game. The Aggies are young but have shown many promising signs of development from their disappointing past season.
Regardless, they’ve seemed to take the next step, with young QB Conner Weigman proving leading the way. Arkansas may be their toughest opponent to this point in the season, so can they continue to hold steady?
For Arkansas, the team’s identity is their ground attack behind RB Raheim Sanders and a strong offensive line. The Razorbacks have an old-school feel mixed with new-school passing attacks, thanks to Head Coach Sam Pittman, and they are a team that can play anybody close. They’ll test the Aggies in this one, and it makes for a very intriguing college football point spread of 3.
Writer’s Pick: Texas A&M -3
The Aggies are still a little hard to fully buy into after their 5-7 record last season, but this team has taken a major step forward and should win in big-time matchups like this one. Arkansas has a promising roster as well, but expect Texas A&M to take care of business in this one.

South Carolina Gamecocks at Tennessee Volunteers (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Tennessee -3
Analysis: Last season South Carolina notched a huge upset against the Volunteers, and now this time around, they’ll look to score another impressive victory over Tennessee. QB Spencer Rattler and WR Antwane Wells Jr. are a dynamic duo in the passing game, but the offensive line has had it’s issues that can, at times, stall this offense. They’ll need to step it up in order to pull off another surprise victory.
For Tennessee, they enter this contest 4-0 on the season, but the bitter taste of last year’s defeat to the Gamecocks no doubt still remains. The Volunteers have one of the more prolific offenses in the country with QB Joe Milton airing it out with wideouts Ramel Keyton, Bru McCoy, and Squirrel White. This team also has a menacing front seven that should be able to create some chaos. This is going to be an exciting contest that you won’t want to miss.
Writer’s Pick: Tennessee -3
The Volunteers will bring their A-game after losing to South Carolina last season, but that won’t mean it will be easy. However, the Volunteers have a dominant front seven that should create issues for the Gamecocks lackluster offensive line that helps Tennessee break this one open.

Notre Dame Fighting Irish at Duke Blue Devils (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Notre Dame -4.5
Analysis: In a match up of unbeatens, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish seem to be one of the more methodical teams in the country. With a well-balanced offense behind QB Sam Hartman and RB Audric Estime, this team seems to have the balance to put Notre Dame over the top in terms of contention.
Add in the dominant offensive line, and their control in the trenches gives them a huge advantage in each contest.
Duke put themselves on the map with a big-time win over Clemson in the season opener, and they’ve continued to impress since. The Blue Devils have an impressive offensive line and an experienced leader in QB Riley Leonard which makes them a legit competitor. Notre Dame will be another tall task, but the Blue Devils look plenty capable.
Writer’s Pick: Duke +4.5
This could be the game of the week, and with Duke hosting the Fighting Irish unbeaten, they’ll come in ready. The Blue Devils have a strong offensive line and a trusted leader in Leonard to help keep this one close, but don’t be surprised if Duke escapes this one 5-0.

USC Trojans at Colorado Buffaloes (Sept. 30th)
Spread: USC -12.5
Analysis: The Buffaloes lost their first contest of the 2023 season last week against the Oregon Ducks, and things won’t get any easier in Week 5 as they play host to the USC Trojans.
The Buffaloes have become one of the nation’s greatest headlines in college football behind Head Coach Deion Sanders turning around a 1-11 program that has started the year 3-1. With studs like QB Shedeur Sanders and WR?CB Travis Hunter, they’re bound to make some phenomenal plays. They’ll need to be at their best for a chance to upset the Trojans.
USC enters this game with a 4-0 record, but Colorado would love to change that. QB Caleb Williams has continued to build his case to become a two-time Heisman winner, and with a WR room featuring Dorian Singer, Mario Williams, Zach Branch, and Jerry Rice Jr surrounding him, he is bound to consistently do so. The Trojans major concern will be the secondary, if they don’t find a way to slow down this high-powered Colorado offense, they could potentially slip in this one and allow for a major upset by the Buffaloes.
Writer’s Pick: USC -12.5
The Buffaloes are an electric team and they’ll definitely have their share of points in this one, but USC has them beat in the high-powered offense category with a strong defense to go along with that. There may not be an over that is high enough for this one, but expect the Trojans to break away and cover on the road.

Florida Gators at Kentucky Wildcats (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Kentucky -6.5
Analysis: The Florida Gators come into this matchup sitting at 2-2 on the season with plenty of questions surrounding this team. Should they lose to Kentucky, then those questions will start to pile up even more. WR Rickey Pearsall is the star of this offense.
As a safety blanket type wideout Pearsall is capable of finding separation and producing against anyone. QB Graham Mertz will want to find him early and often in this one for the Gators’ offense to have a chance to get in rhythm.
For Kentucky, the offense has started to pick up and seems to have hit its stride now just before the halfway point in the season. QB Devin Leary is a seasoned vet at the position and with wideouts Dane Key, Barrion Brown, and Tayvion Robinson, he’s got plenty of options to throw to.
Kentucky has also looked promising on defense, but it’s fair to say that Florida will be their toughest competition to this point. The Wildcats should be able to win this one, but they can’t look ahead to their Week 6 matchup with Georgia too much, or they could easily end up dropping this one.
Writer’s Pick: Kentucky -6.5
Kentucky has had its ups and downs, but the offense is starting to get in rhythm, and that should give them a leg up in this one. Florida hasn’t had as much stability, so they probably can’t keep up with the Wildcats here and suffer a tough loss while failing to cover in the process.

Kansas Jayhawks at Texas Longhorns (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Texas -6.5
Analysis: QB Jalon Daniels is the engine of this Jayhawks offense with his playmaking ability both with his arm and legs. That makes the Jayhawks a hard team to contain for defenses and has led to HC Lance Leipold’s early success with the program.
RB Devin Neal is a big piece of the offense as well, contributing to the promising ground attack. The Jayhawks secondary also is an impressive unit, and they’ll be put to the task on the road against this Longhorns-loaded wide receiver room.
For Texas, this season has been strong, but now the expectations are at stake as they’ll need to hold strong through the rest of the season in order to potentially win the Big 12. QB Quinn Ewers is like a kid in a candy story with all of the options he has to throw to, but the Texas defense is also very strong to help keep things in check on both sides of the football.
The Longhorns can’t underestimate this Jayhawks team, though, they’ll definitely give them a run for their money if they don’t come out strong.
Writer’s Pick: Texas -6.5
With Daniels healthy, this Jayhawks team might be one of the Longhorns biggest threats for the conference crown, but expect the balanced attack of the Texas offense to keep this one in control. Assuming the Longhorns can keep that rhythm throughout the game, they should be able to get out of here with a lead of seven points or more.

LSU Tigers at Ole Miss Rebels (Sept. 30th)
Spread: LSU -4.5
Analysis: The Tigers enter this one with a 3-1 season ongoing that may not be what they’d hoped to start the year, but with their last three victories, there is reason to believe that they’re back on track.
The offense is led by QB Jayden Daniels and WR Malik Nabers, who have a strong connection to consistently produce week-to-week through the air. However, the team has plenty of other weapons should Nabers steal too much attention from the defense. LSU is still one of the better teams in the country, and notching a big win here as a visitor against Ole Miss would be big to get them back in position for a potential at-large playoff bid.
Ole Miss enters this contest looking to get back on track after a close loss to the Crimson Tide last weekend, and they’ll have a tall task trying to take down LSU. However, they’re plenty capable. The offense is led by RB Quinshon Judkins, who is arguably the most talented back in the country.
Then with the focus he draws on the ground, the passing game opens up for QB Jaxson Dart, who has taken a step forward this season as a passer. The Rebels have an impressive roster that will always be competitive in big games, so they should be in the zone and ready to go against LSU, we’ll see if it results in a big victory.
Writer’s Pick: LSU -4.5
Ole Miss and LSU are two programs with a lot at stake in this contest, however, the TIgers appear to have the upper hand on the defensive side of things, and that should put them in a position to win this one. Ole Miss is a very talented team, so their covering is worth considering, but the Tigers should be able to handle business on the road in Oxford.

Clemson Tigers at Syracuse Orange (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Clemson -6.5
Analysis: Syracuse hosts Clemson in what has started to gain some notoriety of a rivalry as the Orange tend to play these games close. However, they aren’t hanging their hat on competitive games when they’ve dropped the last five contests against the Tigers. The dynamic duo of QB Garrett Shrader and TE Oronde Gadsden II is the best part of this offensive attack.
Gadsden has a wide receiver build but is physical enough over the middle that makes him difficult to match up against. If the Orange can exploit some mismatches in this one and make some big plays in the process, then they should be able to get another tight contest this season, and maybe even pull off the upset.
For the Clemson Tigers, things haven’t started how they imagined it would this season. With two big losses already on the season, the team is now playing more for pride than they are with the aspirations of a playoff appearance.
For some teams, that can be enough to unravel the team and start to snowball into a terrible season. However, Head Coach Dabo Swinney gets players bought in better than anybody, so the Tigers should still come into this one ready to go and capable of success.
Writer’s Pick: Clemson -6.5
The Dome is no easy place to travel, and Clemson has had their concerning moments this season. However, after a bitter loss last week to the Seminoles, they should rebound here against Syracuse with a vengeance, and they have the overall roster talent to cover if they’re playing at their best. Roll with the Tigers in this one.

Alabama Crimson Tide at Mississippi State Bulldogs (Sept. 30th)
Spread: Alabama -14
Analysis: Alabama enters this contest big time favorites and for good reason. Despite the mixed expectations for this program heading into the season, the Crimson Tide have proven that for as long as Head Coach Nick Saban is around, this is still one of college football’s best teams. The team is led offensively by dual-threat Jalen Milroe, but it’s their stout defense that puts them in a position to win games.
That defense will get a nice test in this one against Mississippi State where they have one of the most productive passing attacks in the country. QB Will Rogers and RB Jo’Quavious Marks allow for the offense to keep defenses off-balanced, and they’ll need to be at their best in this one as 14 point underdogs against the Crimson Tide.
The Bulldogs have an experienced and tough defensive unit though that could tilt things in their favor. Will this be the year they finally put it together to take down Alabama?
Writer’s Pick: Alabama -14
The Crimson Tide have the secondary to match up with this Bulldogs aerial attack, and that should play heavily into favor in this one. While there are no easy games in the SEC, Saban is 20-1 against Mississippi State in his career and that 1 loss came in 2007. He seems to have their number, and that tradition should continue in this one. Expect the Tide to win and cover.
