Undisputed Super Middleweight Champion Canelo Alvarez is gearing up to have a very busy year.
Many boxing fans and analysts feel that Canelo Alvarez has not been the same since losing the WBA light heavyweight title to Dmitry Bivol in May 2022, but it looks like Canelo will have several opportunities this year to prove otherwise.
Below, we take a look at Canelo Alvarez’s next three possible opponents in 2023, who the undisputed super middleweight champion will be squaring off against in his next fight, and the best sites to place your action like Bovada.
Canelo’s Next Fight Is Against Jermell Charlo
That’s right. For all the talk about Canelo possibly going up against the likes of David Benavides or Caleb Plant, Alvarez’s next fight has been set against Jermell Charlo, twin brother of Jermall Charlo. It’s going down on September 30 in Las Vegas.
The funny part about settling on Jermell is that Canelo and Jermall have both expressed their desire to fight each other several times. It would have been far less surprising if Alvarez was fighting Jermall, however, Jermell can more than hold his own.
While not undefeated, Jermell, as “Little Charlo,” still has an impressive 35-1-1 record and has beaten every fighter he’s faced. In fact, Jermell is the undisputed junior middleweight champion although he’s moving up to 168 pounds to fight Canelo, a big jump from 154 pounds.
Let’s dive deeper into this newly minted fight to see who’s got the edge and where each fighter stands at the moment.
Canelo vs Charlo At A Glance
Canelo remains one of boxing’s biggest box office draws despite being on the downside of his career. He’s still a presence in the ring and not a guy to be underestimated but this is certainly not prime Alvarez these days as the 33-year-old has a lot of mileage in the ring.
The experts don’t seem to care with Canelo opening up at -240 odds and Charlo at +182 but we’ve seen far higher odds such as Alvarez at -300 and Charlo at +240 at BetOnline, for instance. Five years ago, Canelo would probably be at -500 or lower for this fight.
Of course, “Little Charlo” is no slouch. As mentioned above, there is not a fighter he’s faced that he hasn’t defeated. His only loss came to Tony Harrison in a controversial decision in 2008 yet he returned a year later and took Harrison out with a 11th-round KO in their rematch.
Weight could be a huge factor here as Charlo hasn’t fought at this weight before whereas Canelo has 13 fights worth of experience at 160 pounds or more. That’s significant.
Experience on the big stage could be another issue here with Canelo obviously the more seasoned star and Charlo barely known to anyone outside of boxing circles. This big fight gives him the chance to become more recognized should he pull the upset.
For Canelo, this is a fight to prove he’s still got it as boxing pundits have questioned his declining skill for some time now. Like we mentioned before, he’s not the same fighter that dueled Genady Golovkin in a class trilogy of bouts. No, this is an older, less feared Alvarez.
Then again, who really wants to underestimate a legend of the sport like Canelo? Jermell hasn’t been particularly brash in calling out Alvarez as of yet, which is possibly a good angle for Charlo to take here. The less spotlight on him, the better.
Canelo vs Charlo Betting Strategy
We think the strategy for this fight is as simple as it gets. It’s safety versus risk here with the latter being lower than you might think.
Do you take the easy way out here or take what may appear like a big risk at front but may not seem like such a bad idea overall? If you’re playing it safe, well, it’s hard not to like a legend like Alvarez. The guy has the chops and has fought a long line of greats in his career.
As it stands, you’re looking at Canelo getting -240 at the very best, meaning it’s going to cost you $240 to win back $100. Those are the greatest odds, obviously, but if you’re asking for safety, you take the lowest possible moneyline odds you can find on Alvarez and grab it.
For those with their eyes on Canelo, at -240 you’re looking at about a 70% win probability. That’s not too shabby but when you consider that there’s a 30% chance of losing, that -240 moneyline starts to look a bit frightening.
If you’re looking to make a decent return, you take Charlo straight up. He may be moving up a lot in weight for this fight against a far more experienced Canelo but Charlo has an impressive record and a big edge in size with a 4 ½-inch-reach advantage.
For those that see absolutely no chance that Charlo emerges victorious against Alvarez, we advise you monitor the odds as it gets closer to the fight. When the prop bets come out, one of the big ones should be if the fight will go past a certain number of rounds.
Canelo is a beast and if he comes out swinging after the opening bell, it could be a short night for Charlo. In that case, you could bet on the fight going under a small number of rounds (7 ½ or lower is where you want to take it under consideration) or not going the distance.
Both prop bets above are still risky bets, however, if Canelo wins this fight, we doubt it goes the distance nor do we think it lasts more than seven rounds. Should it get into the later rounds, Charlo has proven he can deliver a knockout punch as it the fight gets closer to the end.
Canelo Alvarez vs Jermell Charlo Best Bets
At the time of this writing, you’re not going to get better than -240 for Canelo and that could climb over the next few weeks with all the hype continuing to go Alvarez’s way. The higher that number goes for him, the more money bettors have to put down just to get a decent return.
One of our favorite books, BetOnline, currently has Canelo all the way up to -300 with Charlo getting +240. You can see how wide the confidence ranges between the books as others still have Alvarez at -240, with -230 being the lowest we’ve seen thus far.
Keep checking back for updates on the lines from great books such as BetOnline, Bovada, and Everygame.

Who Did Canelo Alvarez Fight Following the Gennadiy Golovkin Trilogy Bout?
The day after Cinco de Mayo, Alvarez fought Britain’s John Ryder in Mexico, beating him by unanimous decision.
It was a fight Canelo dominated from the opening bell, and he sent the Brit crashing to the canvas in the fifth. However, to his apparent frustration, Alvarez was unable to put Ryder away early.
While the bout was never in doubt, Alvarez may still have come away from it somewhat shook, as he was unable to fully impose his will on a clearly overmatched opponent. Charlo will be a step up in terms of competition, as will whichever fighter is on the docket after him.
Not only that, but given the fight was in Canelo’s native Mexico, he definitely wanted to give the hometown fans an exciting finish. The Charlo fight will be in front of a more neutral (but probably still pro-Alvarez) crowd in Vegas, so he might not enjoy the same boost from the fans.

Will Alvarez Face Bigger Threats This Year?
The British boxer lost two bouts against fighters that Canelo bested, Rocky Fielding and Callum Smith, so fans are hoping Alvarez will face a bigger threat like one of the super-middleweight division’s “Big Three”: Caleb Plant, David Benavidez, or David Morrell.
Cuban fighter and WBA Regular Super Middleweight Champion David Morrell is undefeated in his young career with a record of 8-0-0 and seven knockouts. Recently, Morell stated that he would like to fight Canelo Alvarez in his next fight.
But that fight likely won’t happen anytime soon, with Caleb Plant and David Benavidez soon squaring off in a fight that has undisputed-title implications.
Though John Ryder may have losses against fighters like Rocky Fielding and Callum Smith, Ryder claimed a notable split-decision victory over Daniel Jacobs before winning the interim super-middleweight title against Zach Parker (RTD) in November 2022.
While some elite boxers fight just once or twice a year, Canelo has been given a continuous diet of dangerous opposition for the past 10 years, including the likes of Floyd Mayweather, Erislandy Lara, Miguel Cotto, Sergey Kovalev, Gennady Golovkin, and so forth.
With that stated, if Canelo does take a deserved tuneup fight, he will certainly have tougher opponents on the horizon.

Will Canelo Alvarez Fight David Benavidez?
On March 25 in Las Vegas at the MGM Grand Garden Arena, former IBF super middleweight champion Caleb Plant faced the two-time WBC super-middleweight champion and current interim titleholder David Benavidez.
Benavidez emerged victorious, and many fans thought this would earn him an automatic shot against Alvarez. Surprisingly, though, Canelo picked Charlo instead, taking on an opponent two weight classes beneath him rather than face an undefeated challenger in his own division.
It was a puzzling decision, and one that had many (including Benavidez, naturally) questioning whether Canelo was ducking the young American. If Canelo beats Charlo, he’ll likely face tremendous pressure to take on Benavidez next.
That doesn’t mean it’s a foregone conclusion, however. There have been hints that Alvarez would face the other Charlo brother, Jermall, after he takes on Jermell (assuming he wins), and fights against the likes of Dmitry Bivol, Artur Beterbiev, and David Morrell could also loom large.
We’d expect an Alvarez-Benavidez fight to happen at some point, but fans who are expecting it in the next year or so could end up disappointed.
Past Fights of Alvarez & What’s to Come
Canelo Alvarez has faced scrutiny by the boxing world since he garnered the Undisputed Super Middleweight Championship in 2021, starting with Canelo Alvarez’s losing battle against Dmitry Bivol in May 2022 for the WBA Super Light Heavyweight Championship.
Even in his unanimous-decision victory against Triple G last September to retain the undisputed title, Canelo Alvarez looked like he lost a step or two. If Gennadiy Golovkin came out a little harder in the opening rounds, chances are, Alvarez would have lost that decision.
Despite all this, boxing promoter Eddie Hearn denies that Alvarez is slipping, saying that Alvarez has contended with a left-hand injury during his last two fights, which resulted in the champion eventually having wrist surgery.
But a wrist injury does not explain why Canelo Alvarez started losing stamina after the sixth round in both the Dmitry Bivol and Gennadiy Golovkin fights.
If David Benavidez is victorious in March against Caleb Plant and earns a title shot, the WBC would likely strip Canelo Alvarez of the title if he does not defend the strap. After all, Alvarez can only avoid fighting the mandatory challenger for so long.

When Will the Canelo Alvarez vs. Dmitry Bivol Rematch Take Place?
It looks like that Canelo Alvarez will likely face John Ryder. Though Ryder is the mandatory challenger to Canelo Alvarez’s WBO title, this would still be more of a tuneup match for Alvarez than anything else — which is exactly what Canelo wants.
When speaking with ESPN in November 2022, Canelo Alvarez revealed the type of fight he is looking for in 2023 and when he wants the Dmitry Bivol rematch to take place.
“The idea is to return with a tuneup fight to see how I feel and then get the rematch against Bivol in September. That’s the only thing I want for my career right now.”
During their May 2022 fight, Dmitry Bivol dominated Canelo Alvarez in convincing fashion, a bout that marked Canelo Alvarez’s second-ever career light heavyweight fight. Previously, Alvarez knocked out Sergey Kovalev for the WBO title in 2019.
What Makes Bivol a Strong Competitor for Canelo Alvarez?
Dmitry Bivol is undefeated in 21 professional fights and is coming off a unanimous-decision victory over Gilberto Ramirez in November 2022. Bivol’s next likely opponent is undisputed light heavyweight champion Artur Beterbiev, but some boxing analysts feel that Alvarez should be the next opponent for Dmitry Bivol.
This is because Artur Beterbiev could deliver Dmitry Bivol his first professional loss, limiting Bivol’s capacity to negotiate a second fight with Canelo Alvarez in 2023.
If Dmitry Bivol remains undefeated and Canelo Alvarez likes the way he feels after his rumored fight, most likely with John Ryder, then the boxing world will likely be treated with the Dmitry Bivol rematch in September 2023.
It appears that 2023 looks to be a most interesting and busy year for both fight fans and for Alvarez, which should give us plenty of betting opportunities to make Canelo defending the world titles even all the more exciting.

Canelo Alvarez Next Fight: Betting Guide
If you are new to betting on boxing, we have you covered. Below are the most popular ways fans bet on fights and a quick guide to understanding boxing odds, so you will be placing your action with confidence in no time!
How to Read Boxing Moneyline Odds
Boxing moneyline odds, also known as victory odds, are displayed as positive (such as +150) and negative (such as -120) numbers.
A positive (+) number next to one fighter indicates that he is the underdog, while a negative (-) number next to the other boxer indicates that he is the odds-on-winning favorite of the bookmakers.
These negative and positive figures are based on $100 bets and are scaled to the amount wagered.
For instance, if Canelo Alvarez does fight John Ryder, Bovada may list the odds as Canelo Alvarez (-300), John Ryder (+450). If you were to bet on Canelo, using this example of -300 odds, you would have to bet $300 for a chance to win $100 in profit ($400 total).
On the other hand, if you were to bet on John Ryder with +450 odds, a $100 stake would stand the chance of winning a return of $450 ($550 total).

How the Over/Under Betting Line Works in Boxing
Most of the best sportsbooks list two main betting lines for boxing fights: moneyline odds and the over/under. The over/under is a designated round set by the oddsmakers where you can bet if the fight will end after (over) the assigned round or before (under) it.
For example, if the Canelo Alvarez-Dmitry Bivol rematch does happen in September, Bovada may list the odds as shown below:
- Over 10.5 Rounds -120 ($120 to win $100)
- Under 10.5 Rounds +110 ($100 to win $110)
In this example, the over/under is set at 10.5 rounds. This means that if you are putting action on the over, you are betting that the fight will go beyond the 1:30 mark in Round 10. Or, if you bet the under, you are predicting the bout will end before the 1:30 mark in Round 10.
Visit Bovada by following this link and place over/under bets on Canelo Alvarez’s next fight.
How Boxing Prop Bets Function
Prop bets, or props (short for propositions), are wagers in which you must make more specific decisions than simply predicting who will win a fight or how long a bout will last.
Proposition bets allow you to place bets on various aspects of a fight. Though sites like Bovada will offer a wide variety of prop betting options, there are three main props offered for most major boxing bouts:
- Method of Victory: Bet on how a fighter will win (TKO, KO, Decisions, etc.).
- Round Betting: Bet on the exact round a fight will end in.
- Distance Betting: A simple “Yes” or “No” wager on if a fight will go the distance.
