2023 British Open Preview
Can Rahm continue his torrid 2023 and win another major? With the entire PGA to play against in the Open Championship, it could go the way of former Open champions such as McIlroy and others like Cameron Smith, Jordan Spieth, and Collin Morikawa.
Let’s start with the last time the Open Championship was played at the Royal Liverpool Golf Course. That was back in 2014, and McIlroy was the champion. Nine years later, McIlroy is currently ranked third in the official world golf rankings. More on McIlroy in a little later.
Smith was the 2022 Open Championship winner and is eighth in the official world golf rankings at the time of this writing. The Australian has been playing for the LIV league in 2023, but due to rules that the four majors can allow entrants from both leagues, Smith will be playing.
While he’s a more recent winner than McIlroy, Morikawa seems to be flying under the radar with these odds here at +2500. He’s only two years removed from winning the 2021 Open Championship at St. George’s, where he took over two million dollars.
Since we’re on the subject of former British Open champions, don’t overlook Spieth (2017) or the more recent Shane Lowry from Ireland, who took the 2019 tournament in his home country at Royal Portrush.
Will any of these guys finish with the fewest strokes at Royal Liverpool Golf Course, or will it be another golfer from the field? Keep reading for our favorite picks.

Best Value Picks For The 2023 British Open
Don’t get too cute. Rahm has been the best golfer on the planet for a good while now, and at +900, he’s the best value. He already has a Masters win this season, so don’t think he won’t be aiming for a second major. Sitting atop the world rankings and money board, Rahm is that guy.
Our second-best value is none other than Scheffler at +1100, who already has two wins this season (Phoenix Open and Players Championship) plus the 2022 Masters. Could he make the 2023 Open Championship his second career major? For +1100, he’s a great bargain.
The last guy we like is the player many books have as their favorite to win this year’s Open Championship, and that’s McIlroy. It makes sense, being that he won at Royal Liverpool before, one of four majors he’s won in his career. At +1000, McIlroy is worth a long, hard look.

British Open Dark Horse Candidates
We wouldn’t necessarily call Morikawa a traditional dark horse candidate, but no one is talking about him for this tournament. That’s odd because he’s the 2017 winner, and yet a lot of books have him outside of their top 10. At +2000, Morikawa is far too good to pass up with those odds.
Our favorite young guy in the field is the Norwegian kid, Viktor Hovland, at +2500. He’s been a fast riser in the sport with seven professional wins, including three top-ten finishes this year. The 25-year-old is making a name for himself, and an Open win would propel him to another level.
>> Bet on Morikawa or Viktor Hovland
British Open Long Shot Candidates
This doesn’t reek of a major where some unknown will come out of the left field and steal the show. No, this has the feeling of a veteran battle, with a few of today’s big stars going back and forth with the lead over the three-day event.
We’re going to come right out and say it. We like Phil Mickelson as a possible 2023 Open Championship upset. The LIV player would certainly cause an uproar if he won a major while playing for “the other side,” but Mickelson won the Open ten years ago at Muirfield in Scotland.
If McIlroy can win an Open after nine years, Lefty has a chance to do it after ten. At +15000, he’s our one and only long shot worth recommending if you’re going to take such a risk.

We’re torn between Collin Morikawa at +2000 and Viktor Hovland at +2500. Morikawa is a former Open winner, whereas Hovland is an exciting up-and-comer. As dark horses, we believe both of these players are good candidates for the British Open Championship.
