The current picture of the promotion race has Sunderland at a general 2/1 to gain promotion to the Championship this season and best odds of 10/1 to win the League One title. This shows that it is still very much wide open, and Sunderland still do have a real chance of success this campaign. December proved to be a very busy period for football and league one and Sunderland was no different. This saw the side play five matches over a period of 14 days, before the break. Sunderland started December with a home fixture against Burton. The latter are bottom of the league and short odds for relegation, so this was a match that Sunderland started as strong favourites and were expecting to take away the three points. Despite controlling the possession and creating much more chances, Burton took a 1-0 lead after a goal in the early period of the second half. Sunderland finally got the equaliser in the 85th minute but had to settle for just one point. Just four days later and Sunderland welcomed Wigan Athletic to the Stadium of Light. The latter are another side at the bottom of the table and Sunderland would again start as the overwhelming favourites. Again, they controlled the possession and created endless chances but failed to find the net. Wigan finished the match with just one shot, but they converted from this and took the victory, which was a difficult result to take for Sunderland.
Sunderland needed to pick up a victory and returned three days later to win 2-1 away from home at Oldham Athletic in the second round of the Football League Trophy. Four days later and Sunderland looked to continue this form back in League one, as they travelled to take on Lincoln City. The latter are currently top of the table and look to have a real solid chance of promotion, so were clear favourites at home. However, Sunderland produced a season’s best performance to win 4-0. That also saw them reduce the league leaders to a single shot on target over the 90 minutes and gave the side some real confidence for the remainder of the campaign.

Sunderland then rounded out December with a home fixture against AFC Wimbledon. The latter are another side near the bottom of the table but were able to pick up a 1-1 draw against Sunderland, with the Black cats also missing eight first team players, due to COVID. It was yet another match that Sunderland controlled, so this is something they will now be looking to improve on and make some of these draws, turn into wins. Let’s hope the form can improve further and Sunderland can produce a real challenge for promotion and maybe even the title.
