CELTIC HOME 1987-88

For their centenary year of 1987-88, Glasgow giants Celtic adopted this Umbro jersey – green and white hoops, of course – still without numbers on the back and with a special commemorative team crest.

With the pioneering round-necked, button collar also being worn by both the England national team and deadly rivals Rangers, the Bhoys led the way in kit design in the late 1980’s.

In another connection to the Ibrox club, both Celtic and Rangers had been sponsored concurrently for many years by Scottish-based windows company, CR Smith (although by this time, Rangers had moved on to McEwan’s Lager).

Club legend and Lisbon Lions skipper Billy McNeill returned for his second spell in charge at Celtic Park with the task of wrestling the title back from Rangers, who had captured their first Championship win for almost a decade the previous season.

The team, containing the likes of Roy Aitken, Packie Bonner, Paul McStay and Frank McAvennie overcame the challenge of the defending champions from Govan as well as those of Aberdeen, Dundee United and eventual runners-up, Hearts, to win their 35th Scottish crown by 10 points.

The League and Cup double was secured at Hampden against Dundee United following a dramatic finale which saw Celtic come from behind. Former West Ham striker McAvennie scored twice in the final 15 minutes, including a last minute winner, to overturn the Tangerines’ lead given to them by Kevin Gallacher.
