ARSENAL AWAY 1988-91

In the late 1980’s, George Graham’s Arsenal emerged as the club that would break the dominance of the Merseyside clubs with their mixture of defensive stoicism and exciting, attacking flair. Youngsters such as Michael Thomas, Tony Adams, David Rocastle and Paul Merson all burst onto the scene at Highbury and eventually into the England team.

Arsenal’s famous ability to win games 1-0 began to reap rewards and trophies soon began to come their way; most notably the 1991 First Division title – losing just one game and conceding a record low 18 goals all season – and the 1989 championship, won in the aftermath of the Hillsborough tragedy against Liverpool. The Gunners needed to beat the defending champions by two clear goals on their home patch at Anfield. And with seconds left in injury time, they were still one goal short. Cue Michael Thomas and of course Brian Moore’s famous commentary….
